Speaker 1 (00:00):
I know the people at home, like, is he the
president of the United States? I wish, I wish.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
As matter of fact, I think he gonna run in
the next three years. Today's guest is a Og a
og from Atlanta, born and raised. UGA graduate. He worked
for Coke, uh, he worked for Turner. He's the chairman
(00:29):
of the aquarium. He's the CEO of our very.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Own Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for Steve Couone.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Come on, y'all.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
That was an amazing introduction. Just a reminder. It's an
empty building behind us.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
That's what I'm trying to tell you. But we got
a little crowd.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Of his steed as the CEO man, Like, what is
the number one job for you when you enter this arena,
this this establishment, because a lot of us all you
a couple of times.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Thee you beat cinnis the oh you be acting like
you ain't who you is? You know, I just see
everybody move out the way. You just sit down. But
what's the number one go to when you come here? Like,
what's what's what's on your mind?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I want people to have the best experience that night,
And it starts at the Hawks game. I want to
excite Atlanta, entertain Atlanta, and we want people to come
here and it demonstrates Atlanta, which is all of us
who are different come together and celebrate one thing, and
that's a Hawk's victory.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Now I want to I want to know, because everybody
have proud of them, been through this. What's a player
that we got rid of that you wish we wouldn't have.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
I'm gonna try to go back. So it's not under
any administration. You know. It's interesting. I'm not sure there
have been a lot of all stars developed another their
teams that have come from our roster. I'm not you know,
I don't have that. You know, Kevin Willis was with
us for a long time and ended up playing twenty
(02:10):
two years. And Kevin's been a great friend of the organization.
But in contemporary times, you know, you don't look back,
You make the moves and you keep going.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
So at this state, what do you think is needed
for the Hawks?
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Well? I think you see Resa say, he's had a
fabulous you know, he's nineteen years old. Yeah, he's a kid,
nineteen years old, He's a kid. Then you got Dyson Daniels,
who's in the conversation for comeback Player of the Year
Defensive Player of the Year. He's twenty two years old,
(02:47):
and then Jalen just twenty three years old. So you
have three players that are definitely on the rise now.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
But you know, we like to do a little digging
and we end up doing some some some dig Steve.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
You are an investigator.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
We are someome we do do some investigation. Oh who
is Stevie.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
K Well, I'm grandpa now, uh huh, fun as hell.
Three kids under four years old? Yeah, four, three and
three from my two kids. I am hopefully one of
the biggest cheerleaders for Atlanta, right. I am somebody who
wants to give back to the city that's given me
(03:29):
so much. And that's the aquarium and metro Chamber and
other things I'm involved in. And I love my friends,
and I like to have fun and I am a
monster sports fan.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
But see, Steve, like I said, you keep down playing
your role.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Man, we've been we gonna keep digging, we gonna keep
going in the past.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Now, like you say, you over thed the query.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Now, only somebody with this type of status keep pull
moves like to move. I'm about to say, now you
got jay Z and Beyonce. They don't even know they
want to come down here, but you know what, I
just want to go see some fish.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
I toured her last summer at the aquarium. Nobody there
and her family and possibly the largest human being I've
ever seen in her bodyguard, and she was lovely. We
spent three hours. Her kids had free reign of the place.
We did very well in the gift shop that night.
No discounts, they don't need it. And you know what
(04:32):
the aquarium symbolizes to me is the resurgence of downtown.
So I've been you talked about where I've worked. I've
worked within a mile of this arena my entire career,
between Coke Turner CNN Center and now where we are
at State Farm Arena and the aquarium started to lift downtown.
Now there's restaurants on Marietta Street. Now there's multiple hotels.
(04:55):
Now we've started Centennial Yards across the street from here,
who have two towers that have come out of the
ground and a lot more coming. In fact, you know
there's gonna be a great concert venue there that I know.
You can fill this place, but on your off nights
you go fill that place. Yes, work on new material
and in your pocket.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Yes, sir and mine, you talking talking now, because everybody
contributes to the community in a different way, and to
hear you contribute into all of these, you know, these
monumental things that we have that's for our city. Like
explain to the people the process of saying, like, Okay,
this is what I've done this for. This is what
(05:34):
I came back to contribute for. For moments like jay
Z Beyonce to coming here and have an experience.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
He didn't want to go see the fish. She did?
Who she did? Jay Z stayed in the hotel.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
He stayed hotel. All right, Well Beyonce did, she did?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Oh she did? She was here so so and her mom.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
So explain to the people like, this is the reason why,
like you've came back to contribute for these type of
moments for people to have about our city.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Yeah, I mean, I want to show this city off
to anybody and everybody. You know. Will Ferrell's coming here
to shoot a movie in a couple of weeks. We
reached out and said, love to have you at a game.
Mm hmm. In fact, it's pretty good, Hooper.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
He definitely it will come on. Now you know, we
need somebody to back up trade.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Anyway here you go the same way.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
You want somebody young. So I don't think I will.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Well, but I didn't go as far as having him
on our active roster for the play.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Okay, he can't go to the sky now.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Yeah, there's seasons over. I was thinking, if you know,
putting together some you know, practices over at the practice facility, right,
or having will come to a game and you know
him and Adam Selliken ball too. That's true, right, it's true.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
But have a celebrity game, Steve.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
That's kind of what I'm thinking.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
You know, I got the I know the coach.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Now we you work with us. Now you're gonna be
a captain, not gonna be a coach captain.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
You're talking about the team.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
You canna be on the fantasy team. I'm making up
as we talk.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Is this recording? Because I don't need to know about
to go back on the word.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
There's nothing in these cameras.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Sorry, Oh my goodness, Steve, hold up before we got
to go, because I don't want to hold your two
but time, now, take your time. We got some real
on the gold questions, right, and we want to know
your your your your input. Worst traffic in in Atleta,
I'm sorry, and worst traffic in Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I'm sorry. And then understand the question, well, what we're
sad traffic in Atlanta yet? Well that's because everybody wants
to be here.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Why can we the best?
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I told you, I'm the cheerleader for Atlanta. I'm not
gonna take the bait on this ship.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Come on, traffic, hey, Steed up interrogated before.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Is it Narnia in Atlanta?
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Right?
Speaker 3 (07:39):
And the traffic in Narnia sucks?
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Okay, here we go because a lot of people don't
know the back road.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
You know, from the west side, Steed, you know the
back road and you get a couple of back road
get from here to the airport without getting on the highway.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Yeah, okay, I'm going straight up Hayeville right to Steward Avenue.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Right, Yeah, Steve, what you know about? Hey, Steve, we
got to go to the flame after this tea?
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Do you know about I'm gonna pretend I don't. Is
that is that something the gas company puts on Georgia
natural gas?
Speaker 2 (08:10):
You know?
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Get hot us. I see where you're going, I.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
See where you're going and I'm running the other way.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
Okay, here we go. Okay, favorite place to eat.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
That's tough because I go to a lot of places
to eat. But I love what Geo does.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
What is it? That's uh pizza?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Geo's chicking right.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Right across across the street from the gas station, exactly right.
You can eat outside. Yeah, they got the limon pepper chicken. Yeah, yes, sir,
I know what you're talking about. Yeah, a good taste,
your sir. Nobody and the screeps, that boy Steve and
these scraps.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Here we go. How do I get into the owner's louse?
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Those Steve ask.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I don't know why.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
I just think I've been asking the wrong people.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yeah, yeah, I love to have.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
You, so Maason, I just need to say, go get Steve.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Yeah, say no more, or send me a text and
say I'm gonna be there tonight. And I said, okay,
I'm me in there.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Don't walt pat me, Steve can theye look bad?
Speaker 3 (09:06):
No, I will come get you. You know where you sat.
You used to sit next to me, then you moved
you dump me?
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Did I did I not just say all that I said?
I used to see it next these deeds tended.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
We need to upgrade.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
I get no. I love you, Steve, but I gotta
get closed so they can hear me.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
I'm sorry. We were on the third round. We was
and I can't hear you, and you were funny as hell.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
But it's I feel like y'all put like a blockage
for the players, or y'all trained them.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
To not talk to us.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
It's a basketball game, not a comedy show. The show
comes after the game.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
No, but they gotta feeling.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
We threw some seven year olds out for screaming trade
tray tray tray when they were in the huddle.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
They can't keep doing it now.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Seven year olds gotta behaved. I'm hearing cause trouble.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
So ship this out because I'm a fair favorite to these.
Have you tried the chocolate chip cookies? You you you
to see?
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yo? Oh yeah, the cho cookies. They are I ate
a corner of one.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
If you a diabetic, do not sit down there.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
No, we we got good cookies. And then the owner's
lounge they're even better.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
They're even better.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
They're even better homemade. Here.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
All I gotta do is ass just ask me what
I'm not asking. Nobody ill much, Steve okay, you would go.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
The best thing about being a CEO of the Atlanta
Hawks is.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
That I can help bring the community together. We can
support things. Samir One has a midnight basketball program for
young people. They believe in the fact show that it
helps kids get off the street. Conflict resolution boom one
phone call. Yes, mister mayor, we're going to support that
(10:47):
and we're there. When COVID hit, we took our twenty
eight courts that were in Atlanta and we turned them
into pop up grocery stores and fed many communities. And
when we got great feedback for feeding communities, but we
heard the seniors couldn't wait in line to go get
their food, we pivoted to a home delivery service. We
(11:08):
did something we called healthcare Heroes. After you worked a
shift during the first weeks of COVID, you work fourteen
sixteen hours a day. The last thing you have time
to do is go grocery shopping and make food at home.
And a lot of frontline workers were actually being booed
and grocery stores people were scared. They didn't know what
was on them because of work in hospitals. We assembled
(11:28):
a bunch of restaurants here turned them into commissaries and
provided the meals to take home to feed their families.
So sports are the thing that brings people together, brings
you and I together. Most likely I wouldn't know you
sat in the TV business because I think you're wildly
talented and want to put you in ten shows Kick
Go Back. But we're in a position where we can
(11:52):
do a lot of different things that make this city better,
and writing checks and giving money to charity super important.
Doing things is the essence of what we do. And
that's what I'm not much proud of.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Well, g Man, I wish we could talk all day, man,
because at this point, I feel like we best the
piles because all I'm gonna do is ask for Steve.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
I'm not talking to nobody else in this building.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Man. We will change from numbers and I see on
my screen DC fly and pulling up. Tell them to
pull a couple of cookies and put a couple of cookies.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
He said, I need to eat.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
I'm saying you need good cookies.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
I do need some good cookies. And then after that,
and when you look out for me, I'm gona look
out for you. Once we leave the game, we're going
to the flame. Oh yeah, and I guess what I'm
Steve cooling it.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Now, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah, I wish you well.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Yeah that I'm trying to tell you. But look from
the city, is.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
That what stands for after flame?
Speaker 2 (12:53):
See boy, Steve Man, Hey, you see them after after
Come on, man.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Because that's a permission slip from our family.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
That's what I'm trying to tell you that, Steve. I
don't want this to be your lad time pulling up
on me.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Man.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Why what we're here. We're here the city appreciate you, man,
We got your support.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
And we support you and appreciate what you do for
our city. And you're playing this building soon.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
That's all we want to do.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
We just want to keep bridge, you know, bridging the
gap and building up the community.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Absolutely, that's what we're doing. Man.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Hey, America, ladies, gentlemen, none other thing to see. Oh man,
Steve Cooney, We're going to the flame.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Come on, Steve,
