NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Nhall and Scripted. Coming at You, Episode twenty eight.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
This is a great one. We can smell the third
round is a coming in Tyson Nash. Absolute standing, great
gap from JD is an awesome guy, obviously a former
player who does really great work for the Arizona Counties
and now the Utah man with funny entertaining. He's got
great stories over the place. Plus let the news when
it comes to the coaching ranks. Adam Foot is now
the man in Vancouver, Rick Taka is now the man
(00:43):
in Philadelphia, and Ken Holland will now be the architect
of the La Kings.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
All that, plus Corey Perry. This is forty but we
begin with the Trommee beliefs.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Just an absolute letdown. I mean, the maple leafs are
gonna maple leaf. It's one thing you can count on,
death taxes and the leafs falling apart. In the playoffs,
I fell for Jady three to one in Game three.
I said, this is the year they're about to beat
the defending Stanley Cup champions. They're gonna be the favorite
against the Keynes and the capitals. Then they woke up.
Then they realized that the Troney Police that they can't
(01:12):
do this. The demons, they're on them. They're hulking again,
and they fall down. It's something to lose, my man.
But how do you lose at home? Pivotal Game five,
biggest game in a long time, six to one one
fan throwing their Austin Matthews Jersey onto the ice. We'll
go through each of the big guns falling apart, but
your immediate reacts to Toronto falling apart.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
I mean, I'm flabbergasted is a word, because I just can't.
I don't understand how you can come out that flat
for a game like that was as flat as you
could possibly come out in one in the biggest game
of a lot. This Core, you know Core four and
whoever's been around for a long time in this team.
This is one of the biggest moments in the past
(01:55):
ten years easily for this franchise, and that was about us.
You can't come out any flatter like they were not
generating everything. They played scared, they played sitting back on
their heels. They allowed Florida to take it to them,
and it got worse as the game go on got
on it. It wasn't like they wrestled it back and
and and then obviously you couple that with you know,
(02:17):
some unlucky goals. But to say that, what was it
who scored the goals again Mikola Uh? Was it mikolahap
Greer scored like k Blad scored. H there's another d man,
Koulakoff scored. Like to say that these guys are the
ones that took it to you. It wasn't the Barkoffs,
(02:38):
it wasn't the Ryanharts, it wasn't the Sam Bennett's.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
It was a Fortre, Florida defenseman.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
I mean that's pretty crazy, and I mean Lebrovsky great again,
thirty one saves.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Obviously Sam Bennett scores a six.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
But you're right that the three goals in a seven
to fifty three span of the second Peryer that's when
they pulled away.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yeah, and again it was bad turnovers.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
You know, our fearless leader, Bob Bender has been begging
on email for a for a jdpov. He loves, he
loves a jdpov. But you know, we we only get
one clip, So I'll give me a jd I'll give
him a jdpov.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
That goal that yes, per Boquist goal was ticcative. Yeah,
the puckets rimmed around.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Mitch Marner has time in a playoff series in the
in the playoffs, he has a second or two. So
get your head up and if the play's not there,
you got to chip it up. He turns back. Everybody's
going north. The way that the Toronto ap Leaps want
to play, the way Craig Berube has built the system
is go north, play simple hockey, and then use your
legs and use your skill to create openings in the
(03:43):
neutral zone. He throws a spinner am a backhand pass
to god knows who. Nobody gets turned over in the
neutral zone. And credit to Florida. They've slowly but surely
neutralized the neutral zone, which is a double entender or something.
I don't know what that is. But neutralize the neutral zone,
which you mentioned the other day.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
I did.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I told you they've clogged it up. You can't get
through it.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
They figured it out, and it and it seems like
Florida just wait. It takes him like two games to
just kind of study the other team, and then they
just kind of clamp down. They did it against Tampa.
They're doing it again this year, credit to their experience.
But then not to mention after that spin around my
backhand pass, which is egregious by Mitch Marner, he then
(04:23):
has the gall to allow Yesperboquist to go to the
back post and not even get a stick on him,
just let him go unencumbered to tap it in. And
Bob's your uncle. I mean, that was one of those.
He looks skyward, he doesn't understand they panned to an
iso of him, and we're all just left wondering why
the hell did he make that decision? Because you know,
for the first series all season, he's been their best player.
(04:47):
I can say it categorically, he has been. He was
their best player this year, and then first round as well,
and then all of a sudden, I don't know what's happened,
if it's injuries or it's something, but he has just
made bad decision after bad decision. He looks disinterested. And
I don't want to use that because I think everybody cares,
but they looked like they just didn't give a shit.
(05:08):
And that's the sad thing because this team has the capabilities.
They won the first two games against Florida. And to
your point, they were up three to one in Game
three and then all of a sudden, it's just been
like an epic collapse. And do I think they can
win in Florida. Yeah, I think they can win in
Florida and can still win this series. But if they
do not win this series, doesn't matter how good they
play in game six or Game seven. If they do
(05:30):
not win in Game seven or and they don't win
this series, everybody's gonna look back to this game. And
this game was just an epic fall. Flat on your face,
egg on the face, whatever else you can throw on
your face, just not good and not good enough and unacceptable.
And it just sucks because you know, I've shit talked
(05:52):
the Lower Bowl in Toronto how it's lifeless and its corporate.
But they didn't give him anything to cheer about tonight.
And yeah, it's ever since Arta Ocal at ESPN, ever
since he he did a crew drawing, like a paint
by numbers drawing of the parade route. After Game two,
they have lost three straight.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
I love that cow got great guy score alumni. By
the way, he used to work at the same company
back in Toronto. By the way, earlier in the series.
You were right, Bobby did to look like Bob. Well,
now you just missed the change. It looks shut up.
I mean Charlo did scored for one hundred and forty
three minutes and twenty five seconds.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
The great Snow he looks good.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
He looks locked in.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, he's it's scary when he's like that dialed in
it you can't. It looks like he's ten feet tall
in there and covers the whole net.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Well, it's pretty amazing too when you look at the
leafs big Star. So Bob is playing great. But Matthew's
ten career second round games, all against Florida zero goals.
Mitch Marner ten career second round games, all against Florida.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Two goals.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
John Tavar's fifteen career second round games, three goals. I
know there's plenty of blame to go around, jad I
get it, But it doesn't matter what sport it is.
If your best players don't perform, you're not gonna win, period.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yes, that's that's a irrefutable fact. But the one thing
that really pisses me off in this game specifically, and
I didn't get to it because I wanted to let
you kind of get to those numbers and putting all
that aside. They're up six nothing, there's five six minutes left.
You still have two games left in the series. There
(07:24):
should not be a puck on the ice. It should
just be you trying to get your pound of flesh.
You should be trying to I'm not saying I'm not
advocating to injure people, but you should be borderline cheap shotting,
dirty cheat like you're trying to get in on everybody.
And then you got You could hear on TV Matthew
could chuck yelling at William Neelander after every shift. You
(07:45):
heard it about five times, him saying, weey, you're getting
on the ice. Wheey. Not a fucking guy got up
and said boo, didn't tell Matthew could talk to stop.
Nobody went and jumped him. They just let them kind
of run around. And I'm not saying I'm the toughest
guy in the league, but at least take a run
at him. And then he's following Kneelander around. Mar Shaank
grabbs Kneeland in a headlock. There's no urgency. You have
(08:06):
some guys in the back end. Jake McCabe. You got
Brandon Tannev's who's not the toughest but he can fight.
You got Lorentz, you got these guys. You got Max
Dolemy grab somebody, I don't care who it is. Cross
check them, cross check them. Take a suspension if you
have to turn the tide. Because what that showed me
was a team that's like, oh, this game's over, series
(08:28):
might be over. Good night, We're out of here, and
you just gave all the am If I'm Florida, I'm
in that room being like, these guys are dead in
the water. We got our foots on their throat. All
we gotta do is just press a little bit more
and they're gonna cave. They're gonna conclave like that. They're
gonna concave. Yeah, Pope's poping. They're just gonna cave in
and they're gonna throw in the towel and say woe
is me? And that's what really got me and put
(08:50):
a little uh and just pissed me off. So and uh, yeah,
there we go.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
I love it, man, passionate and you're right about it.
It's more than just a superstar players.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
And here's what's sock shocking to me, it's a Craik
brew team that Craig Ruby is tough.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
We have an update though a little bit. Oilers have
an update.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
What do you got?
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Casperry Cappenan ends it in overtime.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
The Edmonton Oilers are on to this Coverence Finals.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Wow, but they're reviewing it, folks, but I think it's
final overtime recording.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Go back to a forty three am. Go ahead.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Yeah, we're recording this for fans at home because we're
we love you guys. Yeah, and Stuart Skinner is now
confirmed a second shut out, back to back shutouts. We'll
get back to Berubay and then we'll we'll give but
go to Berubay, go to Brubay and and talk about
Brubay because I wanted to hear that, and then we'll
we'll do some Edmonton stuff.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
All I was gonna say is to your point, if
you don't win the battle, at least win the war, right,
so you lose the game.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
That happens.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
But a Craig Bruby led team, there's one thing you
know about these guys, hard nosed, tough, feisty, send a message.
You're just gonna go out limp like that, like just
like a limp handshake like that. That to me, I'm like,
how is Chief not getting in everybody's face to go
go with there and do something your point. I'm not
saying be dirty, not seeing be reckless, but cine met
this series is not over. We're gonna win game six
(10:10):
and game sevens in our barn and we can do
this like that is just thank out there.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Take a Sealis or something. Guys, get hard Greek porn hard.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Come on, I can't wait till take a sealois and
get Greek hard. You know, only Jason Demeres can mix
like you know, high and low culture in the midst
of like using words like irrefutable and flabbergas and and goal.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Then you can quote see Alex.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
And hey listen intelligence baby. All right, Well, for good
or bad, we'll see what the others get confirmed the
means and it's confirm a okay, Oilers done.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Okay before we can't go against the others again, but
Oilther's Stars and we said before Winner of Stars and
Avelantes could win the Stanley Cup. We won't give our
predictions just yet, but hell of a series for the
How about Skinner Pickard was the guy your boy, and
Skinner goes, I got two shutouts for you right here,
I'm Cy Young all of a sudden incredible.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
He's like the Freddie Anderson of the West, Like all
he needs is a little bit of rest. And this
guy comes back kicking. I mean two games in a row. Yeah,
I mean right now, you have to he just wrestle
the game back and I just think, but again, you
can't say enough good things about Calvin Piccard. He comes
in again two years in a row and saves the
(11:33):
oiler seasons, allow the oiler season, allows Stuart Skinner time
to get him himself back into a good mental state,
and he comes out and just plays fantastic hockey. Now,
on the negative side, the Vegas goal of the Knights,
they have a lot of they got to look in
the mirror. I think they got and I'm here's why, Okay,
(11:55):
I'm gonna say why won Aid. I think Aiden Hill
had didn't have his best series. He played great tonight.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
I think guys are running him and getting his head
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
No dred percent, but I think Minnesota Wild took their
pound of flesh from Vegas. They they hit them so
much in that series. I think they wore them down
and it just took a little bit of Edmonton leaning
on them to kind of push them over the edge
because they look banged up. I think Petra Angelo's really hurt.
(12:24):
They were missing Mark Stone. You know, you've Icel who
was kind of by himself, because those are two huge pieces.
I thought Shay Theodore looked timid all series. Brad McNabb's
obviously hurt, So you're missing all of these these key guys.
And I just thought Edmonton's depth and the fact that
they just pounded the shit out of Vegas and it's
(12:45):
kind of listen, Vegas kind of was so they've they've
been so dominant because of their defensive structure, and I
think teams are starting to figure out that they're not
the toughest team, so you can really just lean on them.
And Edmonton took kind of a page out of the
Florida Panthers handbook and just made it really ugly, really dirty,
and again casperry kappen and scores the game winning goal.
(13:05):
This was a series. This is a playoffs that does
not have any of Leon Drysdel and Connor McDavid being
the only guys scoring and producing on this team. This
is by collective. This is an effort by the whole team.
And last year when they got to the finals Edmonton,
it kind of only came in the finals when they
(13:27):
found like that third line of Connor Brown, Yan Mark
and Henrik that really started to be depth scoring for them.
They're getting it super early right now from everybody. So
this is a team that I'm like, I don't think
any of us had Edmonton, let alone Gate let alone
round one, we didn't have any A majority of people
had La but I think everybody had Vegas. And they've
(13:47):
just walked through Vegas like they walked through the Vegas
Golden Knights. Like this was not even close. This wasn't
even a series. This last game was the closest one.
And to see Casperry Kapenan, who was out of the lineup,
comes back in off of an injury and just goes
and scores the game winning goes biggest game of his
(14:08):
career in overtime.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Amazing news, fabutories. We'll talk about it.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
By the way, you're pretty loud, still live Canadian team
could win the Stanley Cup.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
They were still cooking, baby, we got one one left
out of the three because Winnipeg's fucking dead in the water.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
So two more thoughts. A lot of focus on Connor Hallibuck.
By the way, we kept talking about what was gonna
happen in Game four. Well he wasn't horrible, It wasn't great.
They still lost three to one, but they didn't well
we called it right, Yeah, should have been as you
were joking about comedy storting. But how about some love
for Jake Ottinger. Ten goals in his last five games,
that's it. He's been rocks off for the Stars. And
speaking of goalis, you mentioned Freddie Anderson, Caps and Knes.
(14:45):
That could be over Thursday night for Game five. They've
neutralized their offense. Watched it the second most potent offense
the regular season for Freddy Anderson right now, con smythe conversation.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Yeah, I think if Freddy Jake Odinger, we're seeing some
really really great goaltending performer and says and Connor Hellibuk,
unfortunately is not one of those guys who's the odds
on VESNA favored. He's probably gonna run away with it. Potentially,
there was talk that he would win the Heart Trophy,
right and he has just come up, come up, lame again.
(15:18):
And I think the bigger thing is the road. Wow,
the road woes for the Winnipeg Jets. I mean they've
lost nine straight on the road now in the playoffs.
Is that is unacceptable And it's not Listen, it's not
just Connor, Okay, it's the lack of scoring on the road.
They just can't seem to find their rhythm. They can't
seem to find their footing. And I think that they're
(15:40):
so worried about making sure Connor's comfortable back there that
they're forgetting to go out and actually play their game,
which is more of a high potent offense than people think.
And they're just kind of stuck in the middle. And
so yeah, for them, they need to figure that out.
I think they're gonna give their best effort here in
Winnipeg and then it's gonna be what can they do
back on the road. But yeah, to Freddy Anderson, and
(16:01):
to your point, I think arrested Freddy Anderson is one
of the you know, he's a top five goal in
the NHL and can be, and he's showing it. And
listen that the system of Carolina is really ensuring him
that he's not getting a ton of work, but when
he's called upon, he's been rock solid. And I call
it that. It's a little bit weaker in the Metropolitan
(16:22):
for Carolina, and they've had I think an easy two rounds.
You know, I think Jersey was the walking dead and
Washington looks very tired and fatigued after I think a series,
even though it went five against Montreal, that was pretty
taxing on them, and I just think they're running out
of gas. But they're going to probably get Florida or Toronto,
(16:43):
and it's going to be interesting to see Caroline against
Florida Toronto. But this is shaping up to be one
hell of a conference finals on both sides of the coin,
because I was hoping a Carolina team that's often pretty
polarizing with fans because it's like watching paint dry. They're
kind of they got a chip on their shoulder right now.
So and wouldn't it be amazing Meek ran in against
(17:05):
the Carolina Hurricanes, Oh my god, in the finals.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
The revenge Tour, I mean, the second round could have
three series ending in five games.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
I love that, though let's get to the Hey, let's.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Get the point. You're not gonna come back all the
way and just move on and.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
Get to the finals. Let's get let's get this over with.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Like I think the Jets will prolong the inevitable. I
think they win game five. I think they lose Game six.
I don't think the Capitals win Game five. Think the
Kynes will dispatch them in five. But your point, if
you're not gonna win to this, move on just losing five,
don't don't waste my ti.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Here's the thing. The second round for me, I despise
in the NHL playoffs. I love the first round, the
second rounds, the reset, I love the conference finals, and
then of course you gotta you gotta love the finals.
The second round is my least favorite of the four.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
That's a fair point.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
It's just because, well because there's a lot of teams
that went through like the Battle and I know, you
know that they're unfortunately banged up and they're just like
hanging on. And then if they win that series and
they're really dead for the conference finals and they get
walked through by the team that they face in the
conference finals, so it's like I want those teams kind
of done with. Like I think Vegas is banged up.
(18:07):
I want them, Let's get get rid of him, get Vegas. Yeah,
and then you look at Winnipeg and you know Connor's
been bad on the road and horrible on the road.
So I don't want to see him win another round
because I want to see Dallas, who's been a very
solid team. Edmonton a very solid team, Carolina very solid team,
and then Florida a very solid team. As much as
(18:28):
I'd love to see Toronto. Yeah, uh, I don't know
if they can beat They've beat Florida two in a row.
They beat him in the first two games. They got
to do it again.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Chips are down now when child things are gone, get easy.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Yeah, great seventies song and speaking of there's no segue really.
Tyson Nash is coming up after this. One of the
great instigators and did a phenomenal job. Right now, the
Utah Mammoth Tusks up with Tyson Nash after this.
Speaker 6 (18:57):
Oh our next guest.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Drafted by the Vancouver Canucks the tenth tour forty seventh
overall in the nineteen ninety four NHL draft. Were playing
three hundred and seventy four NHL games with the Blues
and Coyotes. He became a radio analyst for the Arizona Coyotes.
He has served as a color commentary of the franchise
ever since, including this past season when they came to
Utah as Utah Hockey Club before recent becoming the Utah
Mammothan check on his shirt, tusks up, Tyson, Nash, Great.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
To see it, man, thanks so much for the time.
Speaker 7 (19:38):
Oh wait, how about that resume? I think everyone just
did you or end after that one, They're like, who.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
The hell is the worst resume I've ever I've ever
heard of it?
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Way draft, I mean, you name it?
Speaker 5 (19:53):
Well, let's go.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Hey, the japan Nippon paper cranes.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
Man, we're missing.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
I mean, come on, let's start with the name Tyson.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Because I was really pushing hard for the Utah Yetie,
I know the was some cock produce or something. JDC
didn't mind Utah Hockey Club. I said, no way, that's
way too European influence. So I'll take Maybeth.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
If that's what we're gonna do, I'll go tusks up.
What do you think?
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (20:14):
Yeah, I think everyone was really kind of hoping. I
think including Ryan Smith and Ashley on the Yetti right,
changing the yettis if you if you have to, yes,
but obviously I think there was some restrictions there with
with using the Yetti name, so that it was back
to the drawing board. I love the Utah Hockey Club,
(20:34):
I really did. But that being said, I now that
I've been to Utah. I was there for the the
naming announcement.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
I mean it was electric.
Speaker 7 (20:45):
The fans, how they've taken to it, the whole tusks
up thing. I mean, just everyone jumping on board, and
then obviously everyone that bought I mean, and I'm talking
like the hockey fans in Utah. It is electric, you guys,
I mean, JD, you've been there yet from day one,
I mean, and it was like that from day one
(21:06):
to the last day of the season to the naming
rights announcement, everyone was just overloading a store, buying up
everything they possibly could. Now with Mammoth right, so it's
actually kind of genius. Everyone bought the Utah stuff and
now they're all buying the Mammoth stuff all over again.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
So it's working. They're excited about it, and I kind
of like it.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
It fits all.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Right, Tyson. How about the draft?
Speaker 1 (21:31):
I know people are talking with the Islanders going up
from ten to one, but Utah you go from fourteenth
to fourth. How exciting is that for the team?
Speaker 5 (21:38):
Massive? It's a game changer. I know when had happened.
Speaker 4 (21:42):
Ryan Smith immediately blew up my phone. He's like, this
is an absolute game changer. We have a massive.
Speaker 5 (21:48):
Bullet in the chamber. You know whether you're going to
use it? Draft up?
Speaker 4 (21:53):
I mean, there's so many options, right, but again, you
can't help them go back to Arizona, right and go
it never happened.
Speaker 5 (22:01):
We never moved up in the draft. I mean sure,
I mean.
Speaker 4 (22:05):
We tried to lose in Arizona and we even we
couldn't even lose right, right. But now Utah they get
they get a chance to move up ten spots in
the draft. And I know, talking to Bill Armstrong at
the naming reveal, he I mean, he.
Speaker 5 (22:21):
Couldn't take the smile off his face.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
He's like, we were looking at players, obviously good players,
but at fourteen it's a different animal at four right,
So now it's going to make a significant impact with
where this team wants to go, and they want to
get there quickly.
Speaker 5 (22:37):
I can promise you that Ryan Smith he wants to go.
He's got a split on the gas title.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
He wants this rebuild to end and he wants to
win now, which I think is music to everyone's ears.
Speaker 3 (22:49):
Talk a little bit about the show you're doing for UTAH.
I find it's so cool and refreshing to see these
kind of like live streaming and you've really taken this
show under your wing. I think it's on Apple TV
if I'm not mistaken, or one of those channels. And
but you kind of do this really cool thing during
the game, So just kind of explain and talk about
(23:09):
it so we can kind of direct fans that way
as well during the next season.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
Yeah, so I appreciate that, JD.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Obviously, it's been a real heavy lift for me. It's
been the hardest year of my life for sure. I've
never done anything even remotely close for this. You know,
you're you're broadcasting games between the bench. Now you've got
your own TV show. And when Ryan Smith came to me,
and I think it was late September, he was like, I.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
Think you're the perfect guy for the job.
Speaker 4 (23:37):
So I don't know if anyone's seen the Peyton Manning cast,
it's a very different experience, right, And how to take
in a football game and Pat McAfee. It's kind of
a combination, right of Pat McAfee.
Speaker 5 (23:52):
Show and Peyton Manning Cast.
Speaker 4 (23:54):
And right away I was like, hey, Ryan, you understand
like I'm neither of those guys.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
I'm Tyson. I've never won a Stanley Cup. I'm not
a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
Like I've had a since size Rollodex, but that's about
all I have.
Speaker 5 (24:07):
And He's like, no, I've sat with you.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
I've spent time with you, you know. So basically what
we do is we would have you know, an ex
NHL player or an actress or an actor, and we
would be live streaming the game and we'd be sitting
in these chairs and.
Speaker 5 (24:25):
We basically interview the guests all game long.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
Right, we talk about the game a little bit, but
more so it's about diving into the stories and the
great stories because, as you guys know, in broadcasting, they
always tell you tell stories. We want the audience to
be able to get to know the players better. And
I'm like, you can't tell a story in a live
hockey game.
Speaker 5 (24:45):
You just can't. Things happen too.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
Fast, goals are scored, you're over talking, you're talking over
you're play by play guys.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
It's an absolute.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
Joke when it comes to that, right and your ability
to tell stories. So Ryan and Ashley have basically given
me a show and an opportunity to bring guests on
and just.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
Show the fans, you know, the great personalities.
Speaker 4 (25:08):
But I'm like JD you know, I mean, we've got
the best stories in the in the world, I mean,
and to be able to share those the ones that
we can't share with our audience is I think is
a gift and I think people are really starting to
enjoy it our social media.
Speaker 5 (25:22):
Unfortunately, we're just getting it out there, I think in
the next coming coming weeks.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
So the content that we have created, which is unbelievable,
I mean, I've had guys on like Mark Grace, Chris Pronger,
Paul Best and that commodore, I mean, all the characters
right in pro sports.
Speaker 5 (25:42):
And it's it's a chance for everyone just to listen
to these stories.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
You will absolutely last laugh your asshole at some of
the content that we've created.
Speaker 5 (25:52):
So it's going to be out there in the next
coming weeks.
Speaker 4 (25:54):
We've also started a podcast, Like everybody, I think if
you don't have a podcast nowadays, like, what's wrong with
this guy? We have a we have a nash Cast
podcast coming for the Utah Hockey Club, so we'll be
doing fifty two of those next year.
Speaker 5 (26:10):
So I'm really excited about what's to come.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
A very busy man.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
It's certainly a prolific in talented what we're talking with,
Tyson Nash Tyson. Since you mentioned Paul Bissonette, how about
the fact his media career started up filming pillow Talk
segments with you What do you make a bus Nasty's runs?
Speaker 4 (26:26):
I mean, it's unbelievable, right, He's like the Howard Stern
of hockey, and he really is kind of how he
started and to now where he's gotten to, you know.
Speaker 5 (26:36):
And I used to like kind of laugh at it.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
I mean not laugh at I'll never laugh at anyone
for trying something right and trying to be creative and
starting something new.
Speaker 5 (26:45):
But I think when podcasts kind of first came out,
You're like, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. I mean I was
supposed to start one with Mike Commodore.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
It was called in one his famous tagline, right, and
I'm like, this is a joke.
Speaker 5 (26:57):
What am I doing? No one's going to listen?
Speaker 4 (26:59):
To it, and here I have, you know, a number
of years later, and I'm like, why didn't I start
a podcast?
Speaker 5 (27:03):
Right? Because of how successful they've all been.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
And I think everyone in the sports world and the
entertainment world, they want to be entertained.
Speaker 5 (27:11):
They want to hear stories, just like you guys are doing.
Speaker 4 (27:14):
And I mean you have your group and you have
your people that you know come on and tune in
every day, whether it's they're drive to work or relaxing
at night before bed.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
I mean, they're taking in content.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
So if you're a good storyteller and you have the
ability to, you know, put your personality out there, I mean,
what an opportunity. But for what Busines has done, I
mean it's insane, it really is. Every I travel around
with this guy sometimes, I mean I could do with
Wayne Gretzky and Paul Bisonette, and Paul Bisonette is way
(27:48):
more well known.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
Than It's nuts.
Speaker 5 (27:50):
It's nuts, right, like you.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
Think of that of like this is absolutely crazy. Every kid,
every girl wants to talk to this. You go through
an airport, you go, we've had breakfast. Not too long ago,
he had fifteen people come up to him. I mean,
obviously that site had a lot to do with it too.
I mean, it just it just keeps snowballing for this guy,
and there's not a better guy it can happen to.
(28:12):
This guy made no money playing hockey and what he
has turned that personality into.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
And you know, just the fans, the players that everyone
loves the guy.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
How fun are those pillow talk segments? And I know
we talked about it a little bit at his his
birthday party, but there is some just what were some
of the great stories that you guys heard or shared?
Speaker 4 (28:34):
And you know what, Bady like, that's the thing. Like
everyone's like, do you miss playing anymore? I'm like, not
a chance to miss playing. I mean you watch the
playoffs and you're like, okay, I'd love to, you know,
play one of those games. I mean that's a different animal, right,
But I don't miss playing. I do miss the paychecks
a little bit, But I missed the boys. I missed
the story time. I missed sitting in bed having plogging
(28:55):
off ice cream, you know, room service before you fall asleep,
telling stories and you know, like dinners the night before,
having a glass of wine over a big steak with
the group, right with the guys, there's nothing like it.
So we brought back pillow Talk and it was kind
of before everything really kind of you know, social media
and podcasts really kind of kicked off. I mean, if
(29:18):
you go on YouTube and you type in pillow Talk,
I mean some of the stories are absolutely crazy.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
We had Alice Cooper on there.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
You know, we had everyone, I mean, Shit, Ray Whitney,
yourself and some of the best stories again too, I
think out there right now.
Speaker 5 (29:36):
And I think we're going to try to bring some
of that back.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
I don't know who owns that content, but for our Nashcast,
which is the name of my show, I want to
bring some of that stuff back because you know, it's
just so funny and just so crazy, some of the
stuff that we have lived through and you know, been
able to tell it's funny.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Soon as I talked to enforcers and tough guys, right,
Jody Shelley's too, Grimpson and afi Ice, it couldn't be nice, right,
sweethearts much like yourself, engaging, funny, trumming guy on the ice,
classic instigator, great shit disturber.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
What's the most you ever pissed off an opponent?
Speaker 5 (30:11):
Oh my god, I'll never forget.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
We were in the playoffs against the San Jose Sharks,
and Tony Twist was retired at the time, and he
was back in Saint Louis and Kelly Chase came up
to me and Tony Twist's ex wife was apparently playing
cards in the room when they were in Sant San
Jose or in Saint Louis the game before, and you know,
(30:38):
I kind of embellased the whole story, and I'm like,
oh my god, Tony Twist's wife was in your guys'
hotel room playing cards, So I'll never forget.
Speaker 5 (30:47):
I think it was. I think it was Owen Nolan.
I said, hey, I'm just telling you.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
I know you and Twister used to be good buddies,
but he is going to absolutely murder you and everyone
that was in that hotel room with his ex wife.
Speaker 5 (31:02):
I go, I don't know what happened in that hotel
that I was I know it was nothing good.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
And Tony Twist is going to lose his fucking mind
on you. I mean, Tony Twist is one of the
toughest guys to ever play. Literally every face off for
the first twenty five minutes of the hockey game one
of them came.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
Out there and was like, we did nothing with her.
We didn't touch her, we were just playing card. She's
a friend of ours. I don't know what you're talking about.
What's going on? This is a joke.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
And literally after the game, the second the game ended,
I had about twenty text messages on my phone and
calls from Twister doing what did you do? What did
you say? So I know they went on the other side.
They were on their phones going we didn't do anything.
This is a total joke. Nash stirred up shit and
like literally they couldn't even focus on the hockey game
(31:49):
that night.
Speaker 5 (31:50):
Made us the same. We absolutely drummed them, but.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
We ended up losing the series, but sadly, but oh
my god, it was so it was so freaking funny.
Speaker 5 (31:59):
But Kelly Chase just wound me up, sent me out.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
There with all this material and take much to stir
them up.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
What's the what's the best chirp you've heard thrown your way?
Speaker 2 (32:12):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (32:12):
Man, I always, I got yeah, I always.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Brady Kitchuk called me a keith yandle wannabe and I
was I was in Arizona. I was dying, la. It's
so fucking good.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
Oh yeah, I mean I've heard them all right.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
I mean I I have I have a nose that
kind of gives it away. It's like a baked potato,
like focus cigar on the shower. But I remember Jason
Strudwick one time, he goes, hey, I heard Larry Klowe
offered you a million dollars or a nose full of nickels.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
I mean, it's pretty bad when your whole.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
Team right on your bench is laughing at you and
laughing with the other team.
Speaker 5 (32:52):
So it was, yeah, it was. It was a pretty
good one.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
You mentioned the fact if you were out there with
Bis and Gretzky more people are talking to Bis nasty.
But you're coaching your last season was Wayne Gretzky. What
was it like, Tyson having the great one by the bench.
Speaker 5 (33:06):
It was crazy? You know.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
Actually, when I got traded from the Saint Louis Blues
at the draft, I'll never forget. I got this phone
call from an area code I didn't Uh, I didn't
know many people from the three one O area code.
Speaker 5 (33:19):
I'm like hello, He's like, hey, Tyson, this is Wayne Gretzky.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
I'm like, yeah, good one whatever I'm like, which one
of my idiot buddies does this?
Speaker 5 (33:28):
Right? And a man up on him and he calls
me back. He's like, don't hang up, don't hang up.
It's it's Waine. It's Wain. We just traded for you.
And I'm like, yeah, right, Larry Plow hasn't called me yet.
It was the GM of the Blues.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
Literally the first phone call I got I was Wayne Gretzky.
I'm like, how cool was this? I grew up in Edmonton.
I literally had Wayne Gretzky wallpaper and bet sheets when
I was When I was a kid, I think every
kid did, right. I mean, he's the great, one, best
player to ever ever play. And now he's he's calling
me on the phone telling me how excited he is
(33:59):
that I'm going to be on his team in Arizona.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
So it was pretty crazy. I mean it really was.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
You had to pinch yourself, you know, with him telling
you what to do, the meetings before games, you know,
getting on the plane, all of it.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
I mean, it's a full time job.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
I'll just say this, it's a full time job being
Wayne gretz peek with just everything that this guy has
to deal with, right, from fans, the kids, all of
it right to him being an NHL coach, So it
was it was pretty unique, to say the least, but
it was also one of the most heartbreaking things that
I've ever been through. It we laugh about it today
(34:37):
when I bring it up to him, because you know,
he was my biggest idol, right, I mean, I worshiped
this guy, and then he was the guy who ended
my NHL career, sending me down to the American Hockey
League after I played eight or.
Speaker 5 (34:50):
Nine years in the NHL. I'll never forget sitting in
his office, Mahogany would everywhere.
Speaker 4 (34:55):
I'm like, oh my god. I got called into his office.
I thought it was, you know, gonna be something good.
All of a sudden he's like, oh, I hate to
say this, but we got to send you down to
San Antonio. And I was just like, oh my god,
this is my hero. Like just absolutely ripped and broke
my heart. But I will say this, Gretz was amazing
and I can see why he's won and has so
(35:16):
much success. Not only was it because he's the best
player in the world, but when I became and he
got me into radio and eventually TV, he goes, I'll
take care.
Speaker 5 (35:24):
Of you forever. You know, like, as long as you.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Work hard and show up and you know, be a
good teammate, you have a job for forever in broadcasting.
Speaker 5 (35:33):
And he was right.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
But every trip we would land, say we would land
in San Jose, it was mandatory, not for the players,
but all the trainers, all the media. They had to
put their bags in their room and come down to
the hotel lobby and have one drink at least minimum,
have one drink, whether it was a beer or a coke,
died coke, whatever it was, you had that one drink
with Wayne Sky and he would sit there and tell stories.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
And we were just like, oh yeah, and we're.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
Just like this is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
And you want to talk about a storyteller, this guy
the sky was blue, you know, like it was he
every detail, this guy had it.
Speaker 5 (36:13):
And you're just sitting on the edge of your seat
just from offening at the model regrets and all the
stories that this guy had.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
I mean, you had another legendary coach, Joel Quinnville, and
you got any thoughts on him returning to Anaheim, and
you think it's a good move. For him in that franchise.
Speaker 4 (36:29):
No, it's about freaking time and the Anaheim Ducks and Pat.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
Verbeek, I mean.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
Pat for Beek.
Speaker 4 (36:35):
There's been some questionable moves, you know, to say, to
say the least, and let's just get this out there.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Zegres, I mean, how's things going with Zegres right now?
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (36:46):
I mean, what's going on there? Maybe I was right
about the kid.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
I don't know, call me crazy because I took some
massive beat back in the day, and I can tell
you some stories of some conversations me and him had.
In fact, I had to chase him down the hallway
after one. In one conversation we had as the game's
going on, he chirped me between the benches and I'm like,
oh yeah, And I'm like, are you kidding me? I
(37:10):
can't tell you what the guy said. I'd love to,
but it wasn't pretty anyway. I chased from down in
the hallway. I'm like, is this freaking kid kidding me?
Speaker 5 (37:17):
Like?
Speaker 4 (37:17):
This is unbelievable anyway, God bless Joel Quimville. He is
going to change that organization. This is a guy that
can handle. Joel Quinville's best gift and biggest I don't
know what the word is, but just his strength as
a coach is managing personalities. And when you hit back
(37:38):
to the Chicago Saint Louis, I mean he had Pierre
turs On, padl Dmetria, Chris Pronger, Alan mckinnis, Scott Mellanbie,
Doug Waite, Keith Chuck, He managed Mike Keane, one of
the best personalities in the game, but biggest personalities. He
found a way to manage all those guys and bring
out the best of them, right, And I think that
(38:00):
is a is a gift and that's what Joel his
biggest strength. And actually it is on top of you know,
all the attention to details. So Anaheim is very lucky
and I'm so excited that because the NHL is a
better place with jo All Quindle in it.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Well said, with those thoughts on Q last one for
you here, Tyson. You finished your career playing on the
nip On paper cranes in the Japanese League. Let's how
much they love baseball in Japan. I'm curious with the
hockey passion there.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
What it says.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
Nazimoto, You know what, it was the perfect way to
end uh end a bad career, right, I mean I
didn't have I didn't have the greatest career, but it
was a perfect one. I got a phone call from
Jamie mcleann and a good buddy of my longtime NHLer
uh He said.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
Listen, I'm going to Japan.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
Joel Dick, a good friend of ours, was playing over there.
He goes, hey, they're they're looking to spend some money
and bring some some guys over that have NHL experience.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
You guys want to come, and we jumped at it.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
I didn't have any other offers, so it was a
great way to wind down your career, kind of learn
about life as a civilian, right, knowing that the money
is going to slow down, and just kind of preparing
yourself for post hockey career. But it was a paid vacation.
I will call it the most incredible culture. The people
(39:29):
were amazing, My teammates very skill.
Speaker 5 (39:33):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 4 (39:33):
The Japanese are so skilled, so talented. The physical yeah,
hard workers, the physical side of the game, and maybe
the you know, the hockey hockey sense if you will,
maybe lacks a little bit. But what an incredible experience
to go over there, play and again wind down your
career and get ready to try to figure out what
(39:53):
you want to do after hockey, which obviously got into broadcasting.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
The best thing I've ever done broadcasting. You guys know this.
I mean, it doesn't get any better than talking hockey.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
For Dyson Nash, one of the best in the game.
Speaker 1 (40:07):
Certainly, man, I love the self deprecation, but you were
a better player than you realize, and certainly you're a
great broadcast on that we can all agree.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
This is awesome.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
Is gonna look like mine if you're not careful.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Those full of nickels. I love it. Thanks tusks up,
all right, thanks so much to Tyson Nash.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
She was awesome, certainly a great guest and obviously doing
great things there.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
For the Utah Mammoth, tusks up.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
We'll get some coaching news here evolving out of foot
Rick Tocket kind of holland there are the Kings as well.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
But I do want to mention.
Speaker 1 (40:44):
Real quick for your Gdia Cenophiland sixty for you on
Kelsey Grammar. Yeah, Kelsey Grammar fan, you like Fraser, you
like cheering?
Speaker 3 (40:50):
I mean yeah, Fraser is pretty good. Decent show for
bland white people. A pretty good show.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
That's a perfect description of it.
Speaker 1 (40:57):
I'm not crazy by it because the fact I used
to always beat Seinfeld for best series, and I said, listen,
I'm with you. Fraser is a good show, funny, sparkling.
I'm like, why was it always beating sile sidebook? Clearly better?
If you sad me thirty coury years from now, what's better?
Sign for the Fraser's obviously siple. Having said that, my
sister in law massive Fraser fan. So I see Kelsey
Grammer's coming to my local bookstore in Richmond, New jerseym like,
all right, I'll go. He's got a book out about
(41:18):
his sister who was raped and murdered when she's eighteen
years old. Yeah, Kelsey Grammer's tragic life. Town knows he
got a cocaine issue, lots of problems. So the book
is about his sister. So I go there and I
see a line out down the door, like you know,
at six o'clock. I'm like, oh my god, well there's
already been lining up as Kelsey Grammar. I guess like
I got a book for kense Grammer. They we're sold out.
I'm like, what they we're sold out? I go the
(41:39):
book signing is taking place right now. You're already sold
out books, Like, yeah, everybody's pre order. It's Kelsey Grammar's
a big deal. I'm like, okay, listen, it's not really
for me, it's for my sister in law.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
I just want to sign. I just want Cousse Gramer
to sign a book for her.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
They're like, he's not signing for people, he's just signing
the book.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
I'm like, I don't fall.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
They go for the pre orders. It's already signed, Jason
Numer's pre order. You walk up, Hi Demers, Yeah, here's
your book. Thanks, and then you can go meet him
just to get a picture.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
That says he's not putting personalized descriptions, and he goes
it's still worth it. Like you know, if al Pacino's
my favorite actor, if you sit to me, hey, buddy,
I got you an al Pacino sign book, I'm.
Speaker 2 (42:14):
Like, oh shit. But Jo' like god, it's pretty sick.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
Yeah yeah, so'm be excited.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
Maybe betteraphasens too, adn't, but it still says helped you.
I'll take it.
Speaker 1 (42:20):
So I wait in line when a couple guys recognize me.
Zach Adam Vinn Hey, what's going on, buddy? Hey picksen
a file fans, Thanks so much, guys, guys, we're hacking.
I go, do you guys doing to go? We're trying
to get Kelsel Grahmer to sign our stuff. I'm like, no,
he's not signing, no, no, no. And they showed me these pictures.
They have six stuff from cheaters like Glossy eight by ten.
John Ratzenberg signed at Cliff Claven Ted Danson sign it.
We're gonna Getkelse Grammer to sign.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I go, well's see it goes.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
I go up there and you get eight seconds, you know,
I mean, just walk up and I go hey. He goes, hey, man, hoora.
Speaker 5 (42:46):
I go.
Speaker 1 (42:46):
I just want to say I love Cape Fear. I
wanted to say the Simpsons all that came up with
KP Pier, but you know what I meant. He goes, yeah,
I goes side showbomb. He did the best.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
He goes, oh, what a little show.
Speaker 5 (42:54):
It was.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
Take a picture, like, thanks so much, Kelsey's just love
you us fan. Thanks, it's sick blinke and you missed it.
Then I watched Zach up there and go, hey, Kelsey,
can you sign this?
Speaker 2 (43:01):
He smiles.
Speaker 1 (43:01):
He goes, I'm not signing, smiles plainly I'm not signing,
and he goes, I know.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
Can you just size? He's like, I'm not signing. It's
just pictures and you know, the book, and that's it.
Speaker 1 (43:11):
And he's like maybe after he's like, okay, maybe so
same thing the other guy's doing as well. And I go,
I'm so curious to find out if he's actually gonna
sign after they go.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Here's what happens.
Speaker 1 (43:20):
Sometimes after the whole circus dies down and he's going
to his car with his handlers, you go, hey, Kelso,
can you just sign this?
Speaker 2 (43:27):
He'll sign it. I go, let's see what happens. What
do you think? Yes or no?
Speaker 1 (43:30):
Do you think Kelse Grammer signed these three guys? Is
memorabilly on the way to his car.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
Negative.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
I want you guess he went one for three way
he signed one the other two Zacher's okay quickly, and
then I guess a bunch of other people the same idea.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
I think. I just thought I can't. I can't. That's it.
Speaker 1 (43:49):
So I have an autographed copy of Kelsei Grammer book
I can't wait to get my sister along, and a
picture of me with Kelsey Grammer, even though I'm not
a big.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Fan, we can superimpose her in there. Hey Fraser, long
live KG.
Speaker 3 (44:00):
You got al Pacino behind you too, which I love.
Scarface Michael Carlyon.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Oh the best have you read?
Speaker 1 (44:06):
Apparently used to smoke forty cigarettes a day, which I'm
like that I could definitely see, like when you watch
Pacino movies.
Speaker 3 (44:11):
Like forty forty lefties a day. He's just crushing darts,
ripping the d'Artagnan.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
A guy who doesn't smoke cigarettes is Adam Foot. He's
a new head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
A legendary defense as a player A system with the
Canucks is January twenty twenty three, a defensive coach also for.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
The Colrado Alleys for seven seasons.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, previously called but the best defensive
coach he's ever had, had to factor in the decision.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Right, jad Hmmm.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
Why would they put Adam Foot as the head coach
when they're looking the only thing they're looking to do
is salvage this team is keep Quinn Hughes happy. And
Quinn Hughes has been in the media multiple times saying,
Adam Foot love him best coach I've had, so Jim
Rutherford and all of his his wisdom goes, you know
why we gotta keep this kid happy. Adam Foot, you
(45:00):
are the head coach. How much money do you want?
And I feel like it's as simple of an analogy,
is that now, not to say that Adam Foot hasn't
earned that right and everything I've heard and I talked
with Micro up today about Adam foote is he's a
fantastic coach and great on that bench. His his his
playing career speaks for itself in all those things. And
(45:23):
you know he has the experience and he communicates well
with the guys. But yeah, this is by and large
to keep Quinn Hughes happy because it is a sinking ship,
the Vancouver Canucks. That ORCA has been harpooned.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
Yes, and actually.
Speaker 3 (45:39):
And Jim Rutherford's trying and and Patrick alviner trying to
salvage this team because it's going in the wrong direction
in a hurry. So this is a this is a
nice step in the right direction finally by these guys.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
But it's not gonna matter Quinn. Who's gonna sun. I
want to play with my brothers. I'm going to New Jersey, Like.
Speaker 3 (45:56):
You're delaying the inevitable because why you know, we said it.
We're like, why wouldn't Quinn Hughes want to play with
his brothers? Why wouldn't you play in the NHL with
your brothers growing up and not have that fantasy of hey,
would be awesome if we can all play together. And
now the door because of you know, Alvin and Brutherford
just losing their minds is just slightly cracked open. And
(46:17):
now it's a possibility. So why wouldn't you want to
go for that? And then if I'm Rutherford, I'm like,
you know, swing for the fences to keep him there
and hopefully you can draw him in from New Jersey
because who knows where which side's going to do the trade.
I assume Quinn Hughes would be going to Jersey, but
you know, time will tell. But yeah, it's a it's
a goddamn mess in Vancouver. But good signing, badam foot, Congratulations, motherfucker.
Speaker 2 (46:41):
Great defense with no question, loved with the avalanche of
all those years with that beak. You spotted them a
mile away as well.
Speaker 1 (46:45):
Oh yeah, meantime, Rick, talk now the head coach of
the Philadelphia Flyers. Drafted by the Flyers, played parts of
eleven seasons in Philadelphia before coaching stints in Tampa, Arizona
and Vancouver.
Speaker 2 (46:57):
Clearly, JD the Flyers are trying to win the PR War.
We're not a good team.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
But guess what, Danny Breer former flyer Keith Jones Forberflyer,
Rick Talket for over File, Let's remind you of all
the glory days while this team probably goes to another
non playoff season.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
What do you make of the Tacket move.
Speaker 3 (47:11):
I mean, he absolutely went in with a ski mask
and just robbed the Philadelphia Flyers. And Danny Frere was
it to the tune of twenty five million over five years.
I mean, listen, congratulations getting that deal, having a couple
winning seasons as a head coach in his in his tenure,
in his career of head coaching, and to get that
(47:31):
is just incredible, especially the way his season went in Vancouver.
Not that it was, you know, completely his fault. I
think it was more management than anything. And listen, I
have my bias towards Rick Tockett. I think he's a
great assistant coach. I think head coach. I don't think
he's worth twenty five million, but that seems to be
the market and where it's at. Congratulations again, motherfucker, get
(47:54):
paid if you can. But yeah, I just think this
was something. You know, this is like very similar Vancouver.
Like you're satisfying the fans. This is what the fans wanted.
Fans wanted Rick there, they wanted Ricky Ticky. You brought
him in, You brought their you know, one of their
most favorite sons back home broad Street. Bullet's try to
recreate something. But to me, it just seems like it's
(48:16):
a little bit like John Tortorella esque with it's a
guy who's more leaning towards defensive structure than anything, and
that's kind of what Towarts brought to Phillion and it
didn't quite work. So we'll see if talk can kind
of bring a little bit more offense there and see
how he rounds out his coaching staff. I don't know,
is the coaching staff staying there other than Rick. Is
(48:37):
it just Rick coming in or.
Speaker 1 (48:38):
It's a great point because brad Shaw they really kind of,
you know, felt unshackled without torts there like you saw me.
Speaker 3 (48:43):
Yeah, the offensively you could see Bradshaw staying there and
going back in an assistant role, and you know, I
I just will see if who else he brings in
and and but yeah, I think it's a move that
this is Danny Brier putting his fingerprints all over this team.
And I said it today on the network, and it's
him kind of putting forth the path he wants his
(49:07):
team to take. But again, there's a lot of young,
skilled guys on that team. And we saw what kind
of talk kind of you know, with Elias Petterson, and
he likes guys with a little bit more fire and
then play hard and they play two hundred foot games.
And there's a lot of guys on that team, especially
the young guys that are just offensive minded with not
a ton of defensive prowess to their game. So how
(49:30):
is he gonna be able to communicate with them? We're
going to see. But the other good thing they have
is they have a boatload of draft picks in the
next three years, so they're gonna have an opportunity to
really build something. And Rick's there for five years, so
you're gonna have He's gonna have his time to kind
of put together the team. He wants and the players
that he wants, and and get the team going in
(49:51):
the direction that he sees it going, and hopefully it's
a positive direction. Because this Philly fan base, they ain't patient,
my friend, they ain't patient. They're great fans though.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
Awesome passionate.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
In the meantime, the La Kings, I mean Kenny Holland,
the new general manager, replacing Rob Blake, Hall of a
Hockey Hall of Famer, went for Stanley Cups executive vice
president and general manager Detroit Red Wings between ninety seven
and twenty nineteen. Recently was a GM and preced of
hockey operations to the Edmonton Oilers for five years, helping
to build the Oilers team that the Kings lost in
the first row of the playoffs each of the past
(50:25):
four seasons. If you can't beat him, join him.
Speaker 2 (50:27):
What do you think of Kenny Holland with the Kings.
Speaker 3 (50:29):
You took it right out of my mouth. If you
can't beat him, just hire the guy that put the
team together, and that's Beach at four straight years. Yeah,
you know, he's with the VP also of hockey operations
on top of GM. So I think what I've heard
is he's also going to be looking for kind of
his replacements, so somebody to kind of grow with him,
and he can probably take a back seat role in
(50:51):
almost an advisor role. But I think he's going to
start in the position of GM and VP and then
kind of work from there. But I think, listen, it's
a team that they're not far because if you really
look back at the last you know, two years, but
they're also aging, and they have some top guys that
are getting older, and you have to make a decision.
Do you hope, yeah, you rip the band aid off.
(51:14):
These are two guys that demand a lot of attention,
a lot of ice time, and a lot of money.
And do you look to give something to one of
these younger guys or you try to make a big
trade and make a big splash. But the two things
that they really need is they need to go short
up their defense on the right side. I don't think
it a right handed you know, like the Sorry. I
(51:34):
don't know if the right side of the Decorps with
Bran Clark, Jordan Spence, Drew Dowdy is enough. I think
they need to go get somebody else. They need to
go get some more players that can fill that role.
That can be complimentary to the left side, which I
think is pretty strong with Joel Edmondson, Gavrikov, Mikey Anderson.
I think it's a very strong left side of the decor.
(51:55):
And then they need to go get a fourth line.
They need depth scoring. You look what's apparent in this playoffs.
Depth scoring has been huge for the Oilers, the Vegas
Golden Knights when they're winning. You look at the Florida Panthers.
Depth scoring is what is driving this playoffs this year.
And you need to go out and get because the
fourth line of you know, I think they have like
(52:16):
a malot hellanious Trevor Lewis. I just don't think it's
enough to get you over the hump.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
Yeah, it's funny you mentioned the Oilers. That's been one
of the stories.
Speaker 1 (52:24):
It's been just how great Kine has been in that
supporting cast new Jah Hopkins, et cetera. It's not just
McDavid and dryslat will always driving the bus. Last thought here,
the happy fortieth birthday of the worm Corey Perry. Edmonton
won't just be celebrating a trip to the Western Conference Final,
but also celebrating Frida.
Speaker 2 (52:38):
When Corey Perritrin's forty years old. Amazing to think about.
Speaker 1 (52:41):
Jad the active leader in playoff games and was the
third oldest player of the NHL this season by Ryan
Suitor and Brent Burns.
Speaker 2 (52:47):
Do you have a story from the Worm not.
Speaker 3 (52:51):
I don't know him personally. I've met him a couple
of times. We both rehabbed our knees at the same place.
But yeah, it was more just the battles we had.
I mean when I started and he was in Anaheim
with that just incredible line of Bobby Ryan and Ryan
Getz laugh and they were just, you know, just such
a dominant team, and we had a great team in
San Jose. Those were just I mean, you'd come through
(53:13):
Death Valley and you'd have to play San Jose, La
and Anaheim and it was three Juggernauts at that time,
and it was hard to come out of the West
with any wins. And you know, every time you played
Corey Perry knew what it was gonna happen. He was going
to be a little shit. I've asked him to fight
a ton of times. He probably he said no every
single time because I don't think he knew that I
(53:33):
wasn't tough because if he did, he probably would have
beat the wheels off me.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
But but I love the challenge him.
Speaker 3 (53:39):
Come on, Oh, I just I hated him, and I
you know, I played with a lot of emotion and
that's what I needed to kind of get up in games.
And sometimes I couldn't control that emotion and thought I
was a little bit taller than I was and stronger
than I was, so I didn't care to get beat
up or go fight, you know, go fight to me,
this stronger than me. That's why, you know, four of
my five fights against guys that got like thirty pounds
(54:01):
on me and they don't last long. But I get
out there and I dropped the middies because I don't
give a shit. But Corey Perry is the worm for
a reason. He's very tough to play against. He's very
squirrely too because he's not fast. But when he gets
the puck on the wall, he maneuvers his body well,
he understands where he is in space and it it
makes it really difficult to get the puck off him.
(54:23):
So I mean, listen, credit to him. He's still producing
at this age and he's one of those guys that
no matter of his speed, He's still going to be effective.
And that's just I got to give him the golf clap, nice.
Speaker 2 (54:37):
Golf.
Speaker 3 (54:37):
He should have fought me.
Speaker 2 (54:39):
That would have been amazing. I just I think it
would have taken him down.
Speaker 3 (54:42):
There's still questions about that. No, I wouldn't have those
long arms. I was. I would have been in one.
He would have strung me out.
Speaker 2 (54:47):
And just but he's not exactly Tony Twist. I mean,
you could take he's not.
Speaker 3 (54:50):
He's not Twister, but he's I'm I'm no, uh, I'm
no Tyson, Yeah, i no, Tyson Nash out here.
Speaker 1 (54:59):
