Patriots Nation. Welcome to the Patriots Pregame Show fueled by Duncans.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
And good evening everybody live inside Jellette Stadium. It's time
now for the Patriots Pregame Show fueled by Duncan, Matt Smith,
Paul Parillo, Tamara Brown, Mike the Show. Welcome aboard for
week number three. To kick off Week number three with
a little Thursday Night Football presented by Amazon Prime, where
the New England Patriots are traveling to the Jersey Meadowlands
(00:57):
to take on their rival New York Jets and the
Jets home opener. Great Division game to kick off Week
three this week. It is is it?
Speaker 5 (01:07):
How common is it though? For a team to have
their home first home opener on Thursday night? It seems
kind of strange.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Seems a little odd now. I mean, I don't think
the two games on the road is odd because I
think that happens frequently. But you'd think that they'd be
walking into a bit of a hornet's nest with you know,
this being the home opener for the for the Jersey
Jets to marry. You're saying, maybe not so much. We
can get tickets off the tickets good, good seat, we can.
Speaker 6 (01:32):
Walk in the car and you know, still have great
seats to the game, which I think is surprising.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Because I think that's really surprising to have.
Speaker 6 (01:38):
You know, hopefully the second chance to see Aaron Rodgers
and his debut with the Jets. Hopefully not for snaps
in and getting hurt. But you know, I would be
at the game, I think, right, yeah, is.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
Gonna run out with the flag again. Yeah, I think
there's a lot of interest because of that. I think
Rogers and you know the fact that they've got to
win under their belt.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
They seem to be making a little progress here and
things like that. I would I would assume that it's
going to be pretty lively down there. Yeah, I think
it's going to Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
His fireman Ed's still around Is that still a thing?
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Yeah, he was. I think there was a divorce.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Retired for a little while, but I think he's back.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
I think he's back on his back. I think he's
back on a bit for them.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
They need him.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah. So what's a big game for the Patriots?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
You know?
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Can they can they get back on track on a
short week and clean up some of the things. I
think the head coach talked about cleaning up some of
the p's and q's. Can they clean up enough of
those p's and q's to beat the Jets on the
road tonight? That's really you know? Can they do it
(02:40):
on a short week?
Speaker 7 (02:41):
Pall?
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah? Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
I think this is a game that is gonna, in
my opinion, shape up just like I think this is
probably going to be about fourteen games just like this,
And Patriot's gonna want to run the ball and lean
on their defense, just like gied Meo said all summer,
and when you do those things, generally the score stays
down and it's close.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
I don't want to put words in your mouth, but
you're not big on the Jets? Are you would improve it?
To me? Mode?
Speaker 6 (03:10):
No?
Speaker 3 (03:11):
I think the Jets are pretty good, but I don't
think they're explosive, so I think that in general, I
think the Patriots defense is pretty good, so they should
be able to keep the score within check. If Aaron
Rodgers comes out and plays like he did pre injury,
then that's a different story. But I mean, I'm not
expecting that. I'm expecting him to be rusty.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Have you seen enough? Have you seen enough him to
think that he looks rusty or looks like he's still
trying to work through.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
He looks to me like a guy who's not comfortable
with his health, and he's getting the ball out really quickly.
I thought both games. I saw more of the San
Francisco game than I did the Tennessee. I just saw
kind of highlights against Tennessee. But ball's coming out lightning fast,
a lot of short stuff. You know, if they want
to get Mike Williams involved in this game and he
gets you know, five or six catches, that's a different story.
(04:00):
Then they're going to be knocking on the door of
thirty points. I don't expect that to happen now. I
think he looks like he doesn't want anybody around his legs.
He's a little I think squirrely in the pocket, like
squirrely getting the ball out really quick, and I think
that plays into the Patriots' hands.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
Yeah, I was gonna say, I think they've started off
really slow, but I feel like they're a team obviously
that you have to respect through the entire fourth quarter.
That you can't just do what the Patriots did last
week and give the ball over to the other team
and allow them to come back, tie it and go
into overtime. So you know, Aaron Rodgers is the type
of guy who can close out a game in the
fourth quarter. So even if the Jets do get off
to a slow start and it comes down to the
(04:34):
fourth quarter, you can't give it back to him and
allow him to go down and do what the Seahawks
did last week.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Yeah, I just say I have no feel for this
game tonight.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
There's too many factors, you know, not to say that
I'm locked in on this one. I know exactly how,
but Mike, I just I think there's so many factors
for the Patriots missing Juwan Bentley, missing, you know, their
left tackle, maybe having to start a rookie at left tackle.
Haven't SA echo everything these guys said about the Jets
though I think Aaron Rodgers looks a little old and
doesn't look like he wants to get hit anymore. I
really like Brees Hall. There's just so many different threads
(05:04):
that I like the Jets for this. I like the
Patriots a little bit for their running game against this.
I just I feel like the only thing is what
Paul said. I think it's going to be close.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Now, I'll give you one.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know, like Mike says, there's a lot of things
that he just can't get a read on. The Patriots
have run the ball extremely well in the two games.
The Jets have given up a lot of rushing yards
in the two games, but one of those games against
San Francisco.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
They got shredded.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
The other game they were actually really good against the run,
but the numbers look like they weren't.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Because it's two samples because Will.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
But Will Levis had four scrambles for thirty eight yards,
so you take that that's not necessarily run defense. It's
not Lamar Jackson runs. He's scrambling around and he's he's
picking up yards. But when they ran conventionally to the
running backs, they averaged under four yards to carry. If
the Patriots are under four yards of carry tonight, They're
(05:54):
probably going to be hard pressed to get one hundred
and eighty yards.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Like they have been.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
I think they have to get you know, over one
hundred and fifty anyway to stay competitive.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
So that's a big question I think offensively for me
looking at this game, is the Jets know they're going
to want to run it. The Patriots are going to
want to run it. Do they have to come out
and basically telegraph that and say we're going to run it.
Let's see if you can stop it before they do
something different, or will they try to mask that a
little bit with a little play action pass and maybe
try to see if they can stop that, you know,
(06:24):
slow the Jets defense down a little bit, and then
you know, go to the running game.
Speaker 5 (06:28):
I mean, for me, it starts with is CJ. Mosley playing.
That's a huge part of it. He's an excellent player.
He diagnoses quick, he gets in the backfield quick. If
he's in there, then that's point Jets.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
You know.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
So it's just I'm kind of going around and around
and around today thinking about this game. And I watched
a little of the Titans game against the Jets as well.
They have playmakers, but they also have some places where
they're inconsistent, and especially on a short week with some
older players along their offensive line, how are those like?
How's Tyron smithfield tonight? How you know, how's Aaron Rodgers
field tonight? Just a lot of questions. I'm not sure
how it's all going to play out.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Uh eight FI five Pats five hundred is the number
here web radio at Patriots dot com. Let's get to
the keys of the game, mister Moreau.
Speaker 8 (07:09):
You've waited all week for it.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
The whole teams in the locker room right now just
listening to this, waiting to hear what you're gonna say.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Here are the Patriots pregame socials keys to the game.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Because I'm on the sheet first, does that mean I
go first? You could do whatever you want. You're the host, man.
I think I'm going to do that then, And my
my my key to the game was make it difficult
in mister Rogers neighborhood. I really think that this is
just essential for any kind of a Patriots win tonight.
I think due to the things that Paul was talking
about earlier, Rogers seemingly uncomfortableness in the pocket still trying
(07:43):
to maybe knock off some of that Achilles rust. I
think you need to pressure him if they're if you're
allowing him to sit back and sort of pick and
choose and do things like that.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
I don't think it's a it's a recipe for Patriots success. Success.
You've got to get pressure on him. You've got to
make him feel uncomfortable, make him get the ball out quick.
That's a key for me for the key on White.
Get him off the spot and make a move.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
You know, I don't it seems like if he's able
to just sit there and do what he still can
throw the ball, you know, like he's always been able
to throw the ball. But I think it's a really
really good key. Get pressure on Rogers, get him uncomfortable,
get him thinking about things. Uh, it's a it's a
huge key to the game.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, I agree. I think that's a good one. I
think it's a good one. So heat on him, follow
up no Hall passes. And I think I used this
last year in in this game, the game at the
MetLife Stadium. I was going to call it them Metal Leans,
you know, I know Fred, like Fred likes to call them,
you know, the.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
New Jersey Jets.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
I think everything that they want to do I think
is predicated on on Breeze Hall, and that's both in
the running in passing game. Jawan Bentley, his absence tonight
does worry me. Not necessarily just strictly in the rushing
but he's a guy that Rogers is going to want
to get the ball too quick in the passing game.
(08:58):
So I think the July Tova Ray Kwan McMillan, I
would say the two safeties Mike's Boy, Jabrill Peppers Kyle
Duggar returning back to Jersey, they need to, I think
be involved in the passing game with Breecee Hall tonight
because if Haul gets say I don't know, one hundred
and twenty five yards from scrimmage tonight, I think the
(09:19):
Jets offense will be looking good.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Terrifies me. He terrifies me. Breeshall terrifies me. I think
that's the piece that that most worries me, mostly in
the second half and being able to stop him without
Juwan Bentley. I think he's an excellent player. Had a
couple touchdowns last week. You know they split him out wide,
got lined matched up on a linebacker, went deep made
the catch over the linebacker. I think in the second half,
if the Jets are able to get a little bit
of a lead, They're going to try to lean into him.
(09:42):
And the rookie Braylan Allen, who looks a little bit
like Derreck Henry Wright. I mean he's giant, youngest player
in the league, young bears in the league, huge running back,
and it seems you know another guy that had a
couple of touchdowns. But Breese Hall. To me when Paul
wrote that in his key, I'm like, you got the
key pull.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
I think it's stup in breeze Hall.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
Okay, Tamara, Well, since they clearly didn't hear me last week,
Mikey is the same as last week. Take it to
the hill times two. Last week, I thought the running
game was good, but when it came down to the
fourth quarter. Drid Mao said this in his press conference.
There were a lot of hands on hips, there was
a lot of fatigue or it appeared to be fatigue,
and he knows his team is well conditioned. I think
(10:20):
this one is gonna come down to the fourth quarter.
They're gonna have to remember take it to the hill
those long days in training camp on both sides of
the ball, being able to make Aaron Rodgers force force
those passes, having to rely on just his passing game,
not being able to rely on his running backs making.
Speaker 8 (10:35):
It difficult no haul passes.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
I think this is going to come down to a
game where the defense has to continue to be good
at stopping the run, making the Jets one dimension one dimensional,
and also continuing to run the ball well on offense
as well, because as you know, the pass protection has
been bad and Patriots haven't been able to throw the ball,
which hopefully they are able.
Speaker 8 (10:52):
To do that today. But I think both sides are
going to come to taking it to the hill.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Do we anticipate in It's Thursday night, so every indication
would be the answer here is yes. But do we
just to take a low scoring game tonight? Aditly?
Speaker 5 (11:03):
I mean that's been the theme this year for the
whole NFL, and in a short week, why would you
expect otherwise unless some guys get loose for some big plays.
I mean Garret Wilson's dangerous yep, you know they can't
let him get away.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:14):
I think if like both of the teams are trying
to run the ball, because I think the Jets are
going to want to continue to build what they did
last week. The Patriots are still going to want to
run it down their throats. I think I'm hoping that
the Patriots run defense can continue to be stout even
without Juwan Bentley, and I'm hoping that the Patriots can
open things up by getting the ground game going first.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
Michael, Yeah, so my mine's a little bit generic. Let
the Jets be the Jets. Like I said, I didn't
really have a feel for it. So I'm kind of
just hoping that the Jets are going to do Jets things,
and that'll give the Patriots, you know, a little bit
of an edge, whether that little butt fumble at little
little butt fumble, you know, seeing ghosts seeing ghosts. I mean,
we know how it goes with this team, and I mean,
I like, I don't love my key, to be honest,
I kind of was like whatever, but I just that
(11:55):
to me, these are two very evenly matched teams, and
I think, you know, if it comes down to the end,
I'm hoping that the Jets are the ones that make
the mistake. You know, Samara's point. They're the oldest offense
in the league right now, does that catch up with
them on a short week. Are the Patriots able to
use young guys, young fresh guys like key On White
to get in there and get some pressure. But you know,
maybe we'll get a little of that. It's not magic, right, Like,
(12:16):
what is it Jets magic? I'm not calling because it's
like the opposite of magic. But let the Jets be
the Jets tonight, maybe we could get a win.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
I think go ahead.
Speaker 6 (12:23):
What scares me the most with this one is kind
of like similar to the Seahawks of like, if you
give Aaron Rodgers the ball back at the end of
the game, it's game over. Like I just don't see
the Patriots defense being able to get that stop at
the end of the game. But if the Patriots can
burn the clock out in the fourth quarter and not
have the opportunity to give it back to Aaron Rodgers,
I think they could have a chance.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Mike, is this a different Jets team as you're trying
to sit there and go let the Jets be the Jets.
I mean, it's a bunch of different guys. It is that.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
That's a great point, Matt, And you know, watching the
game earlier today with against the Titans. It's just it
seems like they're still trying to figure out who they
are sure, and you know part of that is Aaron
Rodgers coming back and what is he?
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Are we going to be?
Speaker 5 (13:00):
And Aaron Rodgers led team, because right now it feels
like they really need to lean into their two big pieces,
which are Breescee Hallan and Garrett Wilson. Then there's not
huge production from the other guys around them. You know,
the you know, lizard have some targets, but those guys
haven't really been making the key plays. It's all been
mostly Breese hall you know, got a little bit of
sprinkling of Braylen Allen last week. Garrett Will's here that
(13:21):
threesome are of the straws during the drink. So hopefully
the Patriots can key on those guys and take them away.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
All Right, It's a small sample size. Sure, two weeks
are the confidence level in the Patriots taking away the
Jets running ga.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yeah, I'm not sure that the running game is going
to be a huge part. Yeah, I have good confidence
the Patriots can contain that. I worry about the other
stuff that Mike is talking about. Garrett Wilson Breeze Hall
as a receiver, and I'm, you know, maybe the only
one in the planet. I'm concerned about Mike Williams tonight
because I think that he's a head of schedule. I
read a story earlier in the week about he got
(13:57):
more snaps than he was anticipating in the in the
second game and felt better after the game. So I
think there's a chance that Rogers will throw a couple
up to him tonight. And he's a guy that's gonna
win those battles. He's not Devonte Parker. He's gonna win
those those fifty to fifty balls more so than than
Parker did. And I worry about those kinds of chunk plays.
(14:18):
So I'm worried about the passing game. That's why I
think it's important, you know, Mike, you said it off
the top of the show, to get around Rogers and
make him uncomfortable.
Speaker 6 (14:27):
Because I think that's a fair assumption, though, Paul, especially
with what we saw last week. I didn't see anything
last week in the Patriot secondary that would convince me
that they were gonna be okay tonight.
Speaker 8 (14:36):
It gets another three headed monster.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Very few people know the Jets as well as our
guest right here as we go behind enemy lines, and
we're happy.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
To you know, the view from New England, but what
about the view from the other side?
Speaker 3 (14:47):
And that's why you're a favorite pregame show guests. Yeah
every year he and no, you tell everybody that I
was on with you guys at twenty eighteen Thursday Night Football. Yeah,
and I was voted out with the favorite game for
the show.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
No time now to go behind enemy line.
Speaker 5 (15:02):
My god, it's gotta ride more.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
And as I was saying, sorry, I whiffed on the
open there, Matt. But a few people know the Jets
better and has covered the Jets better than our next
guest from ESPN dot com, Rich Sarmini, joins us. Rich,
thanks for joining us today on the Patriots pregame show.
Speaker 9 (15:19):
Oh my pleasure to be with you guys.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
Give me a little give me a little atmosphere and
a little pulse of what's going on at MetLife Stadium
as we're about two hours from kickoff.
Speaker 9 (15:30):
Please, Rich, Well, you're going to see us sellout tonight.
Of course it's the Jets home opener, so the place
will be h it'll be electric, they'll have some sort
of elaborate pregame ceremony with green lights. When it once
it gets dark with green lights in the stadium, everyone
will be flashing the lights at their seat that they're
handed and it's sort of like last year when they
(15:51):
opened against Buffalo, but this time you're not gonna see
Aaron Rodgers running out with an American flag during the
pregame introduction. Just more of a light show and some
stuff like that. But it plays will be nuts tonight
because you know there's a lot of hope remaining in
this Jet season.
Speaker 5 (16:07):
Rich is to start off with Aaron Rodgers and kind
of the remade offensive line. What have you seen from
the offense over the first two games with those guys?
Speaker 9 (16:15):
Really good pass protection from this offensive line. I think
some of the guys that Joe Douglas brought in has
been playing well. I think it's a combo deal though.
I think some of that is due to Rogers getting
rid of the ball quickly. I think he's averaging something
like two point four seconds on release time. It's one
of the better quicker ones in the league, so he's
very difficult to sack. You know, he just gets it
(16:37):
out fast. The downside to that is their passing game
has been really dink and dunk the first couple of
weeks that haven't taken too many shots down the field.
I don't know if that's the way they're calling it
or if that's just Rogers trying to get rid of
the ball quickly to avoid hits, but that in essence
has been their offense for two weeks.
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Rich, I'm curious, do you have an idea of why
the Jets have been off to slow starts offensively the
past two weeks?
Speaker 9 (17:05):
Well, actually, it's probably been the last ten years. They've
not been a good first quarter team. I mean last
year they were historically bad. I mean, just impossible to
move the ball the last couple of weeks. It's something
that Rogers mentioned when we spoke to him on Tuesday.
I think they have one first down on their first
couple of series each game. They just have not been
(17:27):
moving the ball. It was a drop pass, you know that.
I think the play calling was really conservative early in
the game. I think the offense last week really didn't
perk up until they went to more of a quick game.
It started with some tempo. I wouldn't be surprised if
they come out tonight in that fashion, just trying to
(17:50):
get things going, trying to establish a rhythm.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Earlier in the game, Rich, I want to talk a
little bit about the defense and specifically CJ.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Moseley.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Just if you have a feel his availability tonight. Does
he have a chance?
Speaker 9 (18:04):
I would say not a very good chance right now.
They haven't officially ruled him out yet, but they did
bring up a player for practice squad, a backup linebacker,
which signals to me that they're not expecting Moseley to
go tonight. So I mean, if this had been a
Sunday game, I think they would have been a much
better chance. But just on the short weeks, they didn't
(18:26):
want to push it with Moseley. It's a long season ahead,
so it hasn't been official yet, but I thought a
little surprised if he were out there.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
So with that in mind, what is your confidence level
in the Jets run defense. Obviously he's a big part
of that. It's been a great player for a lot
of years. The Patriots have run the ball really well
each of the first two games. Where do you stand
on the Jets run defense.
Speaker 9 (18:50):
It's shaky, you know, to be quite honest, it hasn't
been good. I mean the forty nine ers.
Speaker 4 (18:55):
Yeah, we all saw the opener.
Speaker 9 (18:56):
Yeah, yeah, they ripped him to shreds. The forty nine
ers have a running scheme though, just with the outside zone.
They attack the Jets edges. The Jets edges are not
good they even if mostly of course is in the middle,
but their defensive ends do not play the run well.
They have two good interior players and Williams at Kinlow.
(19:20):
But if I were the Patriots, I would be trying
to attack their edges. They just I don't know if
it's the lack of strength or just eye discipline or whatever,
but teams have been able to get the ball outside
on them, So that is a concern for the Jets.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Which I want to ask you about Rogers. He seems
to be the straw that stirs the drink here. It's
the Patriots. First look at him. It's hard to tell,
like too much when you're just watching a press conference
or anything like that. He just seems so relaxed and comfortable.
Now maybe that doesn't necessarily go on to the playing
field when there's guys at his feet or everything like that,
(19:54):
but I want to know what you think of him
as as he's now got a couple of games under
his belt, and his com level with the way the
offense is and his place in it and how they
can move the ball down the field.
Speaker 9 (20:06):
Well, to quote him, I mean he said this season
is like a nice lot of slow balero, you know,
so quote from a couple of weeks ago. But he
does seem relaxed. I think I don't think he's the
same player. I think it's pretty obvious that his mobility
is not what it used to be a couple of
years ago. But you know, he is forty years old,
(20:29):
he's coming off an Achilles tear, so you have to
take that into consideration. I do think he feels confident
with the playmakers around him. I mean, did Jets have
a couple of really good ones at Breeze Hall and
Garrett Wilson, and then last week we saw the emergence
of Braylan Allen, their rookie running back. I would look
for him a lot tonight. You'll probably see him an
(20:49):
Hall in the backfield at the same time. But yeah,
I think Rogers is a good place. I think he
knows that there's going to be growing pains for him
and this offense. Early in the season, so I think
it's I think they'll be functioning at a much better
rate later on as the season goes on.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
You talked about the excitement rich and I guess I
want to know from Jets from a Jets fan perspective,
Are they embracing this now? Are they afraid that like
the other shoe's going to fall after they've watched Rogers
for a couple of weeks. Can they get excited and think, hey,
this is our guy, that this is the guy who's
going to take us to the Promised Land? Or are
they still.
Speaker 9 (21:24):
Weary They're Jets fans, of course they wear you know,
of course that they're waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I had in the San Francisco game, the Jets had
that one fantastic drive. It was I forgot the exact
numbers on the drive, but it was a touchdown drive
and it was actually longer than any drive they had
(21:47):
last year, and it was just so crisp and well orchestrated.
And I had someone text me during the game and say,
you know, this is just going to make it harder
when things fall apart, you know. So I think there's
always that dread among Jets fans, and you know, is
he going to stay healthy? But I think just from
listening to talk radio on the drive into the stadium,
(22:09):
I think I think the fans are embracing Rogers and
they understand what he can do at the stage of
his career. They're just keeping their fingers crossed that he
can stay healthy.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
All right, Rich, why don't you give us a prediction
Thursday night, short week Jets home opener. Who do you
like tonight?
Speaker 9 (22:23):
I do like the Jets tonight. I just feel like
the short weeks. You know, obviously it's really short for
the Jets. This will be their third game in eleven days,
so we can't ignore that factor. But I just think
the Jets are a superior team at the key positions,
especially quarterback. Do have concerns about their ability to stop
the run, and I'm sure the Patriots are going to
(22:45):
try to attack that. But the Jay Patriots have issues
on the opensive line, and I'm sure you guys have
gone into great detail with the left side of their
line being out. I just think the Jets are better
on the perimeter, more playmakers. Home crowd is going to
be off the hook tonight, so I think that'll help
the Jets. So I do have the Jets winning tonight.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
Which I meaning from ESPN dot com. We really appreciate
your time and taking the time to talk to us
before the game. Thank you very much. So he brought
up something I think is it's probably the key matchup
for the entire game, and he talked about the left
side of the Patriots offensive line. Paul correct me here
when and if I'm wrong, But what we're looking at
(23:26):
here is rookie Caden Wallace at left tackle, Michael Jordan
at left guard, Andrews in the middle. We hope Robinson
at right guard, and Big Mike at right tackle. That
would be my assumption, right from left to right. So
it's it's, uh, you know, it's it's really one guy.
Michael Jordan started every game, you know, so by the way,
(23:47):
hasn't been to to.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
I think he's better than the guy that was playing.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
I agree.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
Also, I think that you can drop that we hope
his Andrews said in the locker room, He's.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
Like, Okay, yeah, I know, I just you're right. But
he's certainly everything around him and is a huge presence
on that. So what you're saying this is welcome to
the NFL. Kten Wallace Night.
Speaker 7 (24:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
And you know, there's something that Rich mentioned that gives
me some hope for the Patriots running game, and he
talked about them being vulnerable on the edges, and that's
kind of what I was looking at because I saw
the bounce back against the Titans, and they have Tajay
Spears who's sort of a scatback kind of guy who
could press your edges a little bit, but I think
(24:29):
so much of Quinn Williams and kin Law is a
guy who's got good pedigree as a former first round pick.
And you know, to hear Rich site, well, the problems
have been on the edge and that's where San Francisco
really attacked them. So I wonder if the Patriots can
get that zone stuff with the Antonio Gibson, which was
a little successful last week.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
Getting to the perimeter.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
And I'm not talking about the broken play, but there
were a couple of runs in the first half that
Gibson was able to get the edge, and I wonder
if that's a way that the Patriots can get some
production tonight.
Speaker 6 (25:00):
Has Gibson so much better than Remandre when it comes
to outside Zones quicker.
Speaker 4 (25:04):
Yeah, I think that's really it.
Speaker 5 (25:05):
And he's got some experience in this as well, So
I just my question will be, can the tackles get
out there, you know, can Mike On when you as
a tackle, you know, get out and really steal the edge.
I mean he had, you know, a couple of nice
runs and you know, I think a lot of the
talk this week has been about Kaden Wallace and I
you know, some of the Patriots fans are I think
cautiously saying like, well, what if Kaden Wallace looks really.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
Good at left tackle today?
Speaker 5 (25:26):
You know, maybe kind of just crossing your fingers, closing
your eyes and wishing. But it is a huge opportunity
for Kaden Wallace. He talked in the locker room this week,
you know a little bit about he feels like he's ready.
He feels like each each experience he gets, he's getting
a little bit better, a little bit more comfortable. But
still to be thrown into the fire on the left side,
it's a lot to ask.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
I'm hopefully worried about it. I got to be honest,
I think you'll be fine.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
So you mentioned Kaden Wallas, We go to the email machine,
at web radio at Patriots dot com. This is Mica
from South Dakota. To me, the most important best case
scenario for the Patriots is that Caden Wall shows to
us that he can hold his own as a tackle.
He has some talon Penn State. If he shows it
he has the potential to be a good piece on
the offensive line, then that will be the best thing
(26:10):
for the Patriots coming out of the game. Your thoughts
and Paul, I want to know. I'd like to dig
a little bit deeper into your thoughts that you just
gave us. You think he's going to be fine. Why?
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Because I just think offensive lines are just kind of
all in the same boat in general. There's a couple
of really good offensive lines and everybody else is sort
of mixing and matching, patching it together and figuring out
ways to work around him. I don't anticipate him just
missing assignments all over the place. Last week, I thought
Vederian Lowe was fine. I didn't think it was a
(26:44):
huge breakdown. We all mentioned that Owen who struggled last week.
Yeah he did, and there was some pressure, and I
think there's going to be pressure tonight too. But I
just don't think the game is going to fall apart
because of the offensive line. I just I haven't seen
a lot of that happen, and they have correct me
if I'm wrong.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
Mike.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
The stat services that you and Evan live by have
the Patriots somewhere on thirtieth thirty first and pass rate, pressure,
pressure allowed.
Speaker 5 (27:13):
Yeah, and the Jets are number one at that. So yeah,
you know, I I.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
So there's gonna be there's gonna be pressure.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
Yeah, no question.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
It's definitely something to consider. I mean, I will say too,
I think we get so caught up like two games,
it's not much of a sample size to go back
into all these matchups and stats and you know, think
that this is who these teams absolutely are. It's it's
hard to go off of those things. But you know,
I look at a guy like Will McDonald, who's probably
gonna step in for Jermaine Johnson.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
Who really like pass rusher.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
I mean, he's kind of almost like a taller version
of Ouch, but he's probably gonna play some significant snaps
on the edge tonight. So that's a good place to target.
I like that matchup in the run game for the Patriot.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
I think I've used the phrase sample size at least
twice so far in twenty seven or almost twenty eight minutes.
But having said that, don't we anticipate that the Patriots
coaching staff watched the forty nine ers and said, look
at the success that they they were able to, you know,
make some hay here going outside, We've got to at
least try it.
Speaker 5 (28:07):
Yeah, which you think for sure and I think is
rich intimated. You know, that's a very unique running game,
and even with a backup running to be times, have
you seen it in a in a Shanahan coach team
where who's this guy? And then he runs for like
one hundred and fifty yards?
Speaker 4 (28:19):
So it does happen.
Speaker 5 (28:20):
They're a very well coached team in San Francisco. The
Patriots are still trying to figure this system out and
install it, and you know, day by day getting better
and better at it. But you know, even Austin Hooper
two weeks ago said, we're still really running our vanilla stuff.
So on a short week, are they going to be
able to really expand out of that and get too creative?
I mean, I'd like to just start with how about
we make some passes?
Speaker 6 (28:39):
I understand, say the forty nine Ers have one of
those really good offensive lines.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Right as we're talking about a lot of time here
understandably about the offensive line, Mike, let's remind Patriot fans
the Patriots have had what twenty snaps at least where
they're putting six offensive linemen on the field. Who are
we looking at here from a depth standpoint? Who would
be your sixth offensive lineman when you want to do
(29:04):
that in the game.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
Yeah, well you're looking at the two guys who they
acquired right at the start of the season when cut
down happened, they acquired a couple offensive lineman Demontre Jacobs,
Trey as he'd like to be called, then Zachary Thomas.
Thomas was active last week as a backup interior guy.
But I would expect that Trey Jacobs will be the backup.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
No, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
I don't know if they trust him enough yet to
do that kind of stuff.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
And yeah, it's a good point to bring up.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Like last week, they also used Michael Jordan a little bit,
I mean sorry, Nick Leverett a little bit as a
full back and then motioned about on the wildcat play.
So I wonder if maybe they look at a veteran
like that and maybe feel better with him in that role.
But Matt brings up a good point because it is
something that has been a part of their offense in
both games.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
A snipe.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
I mean it was it was eighteen times in the opener.
Now that counted all the Neil downs at the end,
but they they did it, I think seven times last
week too, eight times maybe. So yeah, it's something they
want to do. And if you can't do it because
you don't have anybody to do it, I think that
hurts you.
Speaker 10 (30:07):
Right.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
Uh, let's see web radio at Patriots dot com. Good morning, everyone,
says Jake from Australia here, just wondering if it's too
early to crack a bud light the five o'clock someplace
you can to me. Sounds like his next question also,
has anyone got a feeling that Brissette won't make it
(30:29):
out of the game tonight.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
I would never say that, but I would say that
it's not sustainable for him to keep taking hits like
he has.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
There were at least three occasions last.
Speaker 5 (30:37):
Week when I was like, ooh, you know, we know,
we know in history of the Patriots play the Jets,
sometimes quarterbacks do get hurt, and it changes, it alters franchises.
So hopefully that does not happen tonight. But I never
like to predict that tonight.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
But they got it.
Speaker 5 (30:52):
They got to keep them clean and he can't keep
getting hit like yet.
Speaker 4 (30:54):
I also don't want to appreciate that, sorry, but I also.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
Don't want to keep watching him scramble like He's not
one of those mobile quarterbacks that you want doing that
type of stuff. He's not the one I want to
continue to see scrambling and trying to make a play
with his legs.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
And while I don't necessarily disagree with you, I think
when the play broke down, he did a more than
admirable job of really trying to avoid some hits getting
out of the way. That play where he when he
went to his left a little bit and threw against
his body and found Henry a big play in the
first quarter. That was a nice looking play and an
athletic looking play. I just don't think maybe to your point,
(31:31):
he wants to make a living.
Speaker 8 (31:32):
Offer, No, I don't think it's sustainable.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
Yeah, I think Hunter Henry, like a lot of those
success he had last week was from those improv plays.
Speaker 8 (31:40):
So it's great that he can do it.
Speaker 6 (31:41):
I don't want him to be a robot, but I
also don't want him running for his life and trying
to force things either.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
I would say, though, that's an area where Drake May
really shined to me this summer was just his athleticism
on the move, his ability to flick the ball and
watch it go down the field. So those kind of
things eventually down the road, I don't think we're going
to be as worried about them as we are right now.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Two minutes in and that's the first Drake May mentioned Mike.
I'm impressed by that. It won't be the last as
run the Patriots pregame show fueled by Duncan, the international
feel for Patriots dot com and the pregame social continues.
This is Dougie from Scotland who asks, hello, mate, I
just finished my work and have tomorrow off, planning to
stay up and have a couple of RUMs. Do you
(32:20):
think our d line will be able to win the
Battle of Trenches and make it into a game that
the Patriots defense and special teams win.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
I hope, so, I mean, to be honest, I haven't been.
I mean, Keyon White has impressed me. I think Devon
Gotshaw you know what you're gonna get with him.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
But after that, I think it's been a little little
hit or miss.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
I mean, Daniel Qualley's playing a lot, it's not impacting
the game a ton. I know they ask a lot
of those guys, but still him, Dietrich Wise, you know,
even Jeremiah Farms.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
I mean, don't hear their name.
Speaker 5 (32:48):
I just I get back to what they've had in
previous years, and you had Lawrence Guy, and you had
Matthew Judon, even though he's not really defensive lineman. You
had Christian Barmore, even like guys like Carl Davis. They
just don't have those guys anymore. And not to say
that that that that those guys were all pros or anything,
but I think a lot of those guys were proven
NFL players.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
And right now, you know those guys that I.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
Mentioned, Jeremiah Farms, Daniel Quality, kind of journeymen, practice squad
type guys getting their chances, but they got to start producing,
they got to start making an impact and to the
point of getting pressure on Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (33:20):
Those are those are key guys.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
So one thing that Rich mentioned that I that I
found interesting. We talked about the Jets sort of got
going a little bit last week against Tennessee when they
went to a little bit of a tempo and hurried
up a little bit. I thought Seattle used that effectively
throughout the game and it wasn't necessarily hurry up as
it was no huddle, and I think that in turn,
(33:41):
kept you know, personnel on the field at times for
the Patriots, kept them out of cirt.
Speaker 5 (33:46):
We have a fly kill, We're going to sacrifice it for.
Speaker 3 (33:50):
The And if you guys think I'm just like the
old man like waving at butterflies and stuff, there is
a fly.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
In here that's bugging me.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
So I think that that might be some and that
you know, we talked about the Patriots, you know, probably
went to school on a little bit on that. The
production that the Niners had on the edge. You know,
maybe you know, Aaron Rodgers does a little bit more
in terms of tempo tonight, and that I think that, yeah,
tempo in and out of the huddle, you know, not
(34:19):
necessarily hurry up. But I do think that that no huddle,
no huddle, you know, could be effective for them, and
something that like that keeps like a guy like gotcha
in the field all three downs, and that's not.
Speaker 5 (34:30):
Why paper can't want you can't make a match.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
So we want to read them all. They especially when
they dare you that you won't read it. This is
Katie who writes in you won't read this, but please
forward to Fred and ownership and the pregame show is
a perfect example that they won't pay for a real
humorous host. The show is not what it used to be,
and so they want a new host. So we just
(34:52):
want to make sure that they I would at least
say that we won't read it. We'll read it all.
We'll read it all. Web radio dot Com the address here.
I think I want to go back to something that
Sumini was talking about when we had him on, and
that's the Jets running game. I think the Jets want
to come out tonight and throw it. I think they
(35:14):
want to get ahead. I think they want to make
the Patriots play from behind. Couldn't lean on the run
to just sort of hammer home the win.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
Yeah, which that's scared totally co sign on that. I
think that's I think any team that plays the Patriot
should attack them that.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
Way and be aggressive coming out of the shoot.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
And Mike du So old school football coach from nineteen
seventy two, who are going to throw, throw to score
and to score and run to win.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Well, I think that means it could be a big
game for Christian Gonzales, who we've been wondering, like, you know,
how would he show up this year after his injury
and throughout training camp? I know people were like, you know,
is he really trying?
Speaker 8 (35:48):
What's he doing?
Speaker 6 (35:49):
Because he was allowing a lot of catches and stuff.
I'm wondering this would be probably a measuring stick for
him tonight if they do come out.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
Like, well, hasn't it been a measuring stick since the
season started. Between Chase and the opener Met Calf last week,
It's a pretty good gauntlet now most teams have those
kind of receivers. Tonight he gets Garrett Wilson, you'd think,
how would you say he's fared today?
Speaker 5 (36:08):
I think he's been good. I mean, you know, I
think he's the least of my worries right now. Again,
he's played six games now in the NFL, so I
you know, I'm not ready to annoint him the next
great corner of the NFL. I love what he's doing.
Today's a great challenge for him. I think, to me,
the bigger thing is what Paul said is who are
the b targets? I think if the Patriots are smart,
they're gonna say, we're not gonna let Garrett Wilson Petez.
Speaker 4 (36:27):
So do you double him? Well?
Speaker 5 (36:29):
I mean, is it that or is it the old
double the double two and and and just put him
on or you know, let him man up number two.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
I don't cross your fingers.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
I think it might be a waste tonight because I
think there's a big drop off. And I mean I
think everything Paul said about Mike Williams, with his size,
it's a little bit of a mismatch, especially if somehow
they're able to get him on Marcus Jones. You know,
I love Jonathan Jones, but he's not too so that's
uh to me. I think I think tonight they're gonna
put Gonzalez on Wilson. I think Gonzalez will do a
pretty solid job. But I think if the Jets are
(36:58):
able to execute that passing game attack, as we said,
it's going to be with those be guys, you know,
and hitting Tyler Conklin and you know those.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
I just would be curious, will will they do it?
Will they just say, Gonzales, you just take Garrett Wilson
all night, because they haven't done it yet.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
No, And I don't I didn't do it.
Speaker 3 (37:14):
They didn't do it with Metcalfs, And I'm just curious
to see if they'll do it tonight.
Speaker 5 (37:17):
And I think, uh, just to get a little nerd
stats here for a second, they did a little bit
of a you know, a deep dive. Everyone's talking about
the cover two thing and a big talking point today
Melkiper saying they need to outlaw that the cover two,
which is ridiculous, as you said, But diving into the stats,
the Patriots have been a team we long thought of
them as man coverage on third down, and they've really
(37:37):
gone to cover two on third down and playing zone
on third down and not trying to man guys up
and trying to take big plays away. So does that
let Gonzalez just travel with Wilson?
Speaker 4 (37:48):
Does that?
Speaker 5 (37:49):
Is that even in their repertoire anymore? Is that something
they want to do? Or are they going to say, look,
we're just going to take away the big plays, We're
going to play zone. I don't I don't love it
because I don't think Gonzales is great in zone. I
think that kind of waste some of his talent because
he's excellent a mirroring and I think with that, you know,
Garrett Wilson advertised, I love Garret Wilson, who was one
of my favorite guys coming out. But I think that
it's physical. It's an okay matchup for them. So Patriots
(38:11):
have been leading the way and they've definitely altered how they've.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
Been playing a little bit on defense, especially on third down.
Speaker 3 (38:15):
It's not Evan Lazarre, but Alan Lazarre, who's got some
familiarity with Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
You got to watch out for him as well. Eight
five to five Pats five hundred is a number pat
from Aguauan. Let's kick things off on the Patriots pregame show,
fuel by Duncan Hi.
Speaker 11 (38:28):
Pat Hey, good evening, everyone.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
Good evening, pat Hello, Patty.
Speaker 11 (38:36):
So, at the expense of like not repeating what I've
stated during the week, I'll just throw something out there
to all you guys, just a question if we're able
to take away Garrett Wilson. Do you guys think that
there's any way that, like if we forced Alan Lazard
and Mike Williams to beat us? Do you think they
could do it? And unfortunately, I don't like our I
(39:00):
don't like our chances in this game. Just the short week.
Our whole offensive line is beat up. And yeah, man,
as much as I hate to say it, I think
the Jets are winning tonight. But I want to get
your guys opinion on that. And just if you think
the secondary receivers for the Jets can can do the
job and I'll take it off the here.
Speaker 4 (39:19):
Guys, thanks, thanks, thanks for your call.
Speaker 3 (39:20):
Pat, I do, but it's up to Rogers. You know,
does Rogers play?
Speaker 4 (39:24):
You know?
Speaker 3 (39:26):
I think Rogers would need to be better than he's
been so far in the first two games. You know,
like I thought he was a little better in the
second game than he was in the first game. Is
he a little bit better in this one than he
was in the last one? I think, you know, guys
like Lizard and Williams and as a rookie that I
kind of like Malachai Corley, who's got a I think
it's been a bit player so far. Mike has talked
(39:47):
a lot about the two backs. They've both been involved
in the passing game, there's enough.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
Yeah, they have they have that.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
That's a much much more, much more options than Cincinnati
had in the opener.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
It's I mean, to me, it's Breest Hall in the
passing game. I think that's a mismatch. And especially when Patriots,
I mean traditionally bigger linebackers, not quite those you know,
smaller kind of cover guys. So I would expect the
Jets to try to isolate Breese Hall on linebackers, try
to take advantage of those.
Speaker 4 (40:14):
I think he moves really well.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
I mean, Paul and I were kind of weighing, you know,
Jeelanie to Vai stepping in for for Bentley in terms
of his role. But you know, when the Patriots get
into man coverage and all of a sudden you see
Breese Hall motion out wide and you see Jeelani to
Va Ray Kwan McMillan, you know, Christian Ellis even for
that matter, one of those guys going out with him.
Speaker 4 (40:31):
That's a that's a matchup. I would I would attack
Christian from LA You're next to the Patriots pregame show
fueled by Duncan. Hello, Christian, Hey, you guys, good afternoon, Hey,
and good Thursday to you, Happy Thursday to you. Yes, sir,
Yes we can.
Speaker 12 (40:48):
Okay, so hey, I am as a lifelong Patriots fan,
I am thrilled that coming into the season, I was,
like a lot of people I just saw as kind
of being a disaster and maybe fumbling around and stuff.
But it seems like we've gotten something together and I'm
thrilled that we have at least a puncher's chance tonight
in that if we play, you know, not so much
(41:08):
above our weight, but if we just play a solid game,
don't commit a lot of unforced errors, I think we can,
you know, go go toe to toe of them right
down to the end of the game. What do you
guys think would be the finding X factor? If you
could pick out one player and say, if this guy
does this, then we definitely win.
Speaker 4 (41:25):
Christian, thank you for your call. I'm gonna take that
one first and say this. How about a wide receiver
any one of them? Can? I ask what the Jets do?
I don't know that we know that yet, no.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
But I'm saying like, if the Patriots, you know, don't
make any mistakes and you know, well Cincinnati puked all
over themselves. If the Jets puke all over themselves. I
think that Jets the Patriots.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
Can win yests.
Speaker 5 (41:45):
But let the Jets be the Jets.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
But if the Patriots don't make any mistakes and they
have a punchers chance, and the Jets don't make any mistakes,
I don't think they'll have a punchers chance, right, And
so I think that there's a lot of factors involved.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
So let's talk turnovers. None through the first two games
for the Patriots, they have fumbled the ball a couple
of times with some fortuitous bounces, but they haven't given
it away to the other team. Last week, they failed
to take any balls away. I think in order to
beat the Jets tonight, they're gonna need some help from
the Jets. They're gonna have to force some turnovers in
order to get to w Yeah.
Speaker 3 (42:17):
I mean, maybe not turnovers, but they're gonna have to
force the Jets to play poorly. Cincinnati was bad right
in the first game, I mean turnovers aside. They played
poorly and the Patriots made them play poorly. You know,
I think the Patriots forced them to do a lot
of things offensively that they don't want to do. You know,
Can they make the Jets look bad like that too.
(42:38):
Then then they'll have a punchish chance. That Christian said
for me.
Speaker 5 (42:41):
It's if you're not gonna get if you're not gonna
turn to you know, if you're gonna turn the ball over,
you got to produce explosive plays to offset those those turnovers.
So you know, there's been really no explosive passing plays
this year. They need to find a way to do that,
and that's I think how they can turn the pageant
and get to the night.
Speaker 3 (42:56):
So they's think back to last year, Week three, this
very stadium, same week, you know, as a weird little
play Brown where they catch Parrell Brown for fifty some
odd yard touchdown. Right, that's all it takes, and it
was like one play and it won you the game.
That's I think you're gonna be in a game like
(43:17):
that if if the Jets you know, just sort of
play meh and you just sort of play met like,
it's gonna be one of those kinds of games that
if you can make a play and get some separation.
To me, the first quarter is so important. You get
a lead and play the game the way you want
to and make the Jets chase all night. I think
if the Jets get off to a good start, it's
gonna be like which the mean he said, gonna be
(43:38):
a packed house. They're gonna be going wild, they're gonna
feel good, they're gonna feel hope. But if they fall behind,
that's a crowd that can absolutely turn on.
Speaker 4 (43:48):
The home team. Yeah, in a blink. So everybody's been
talking about the lack of explosive plays, no downfield passing,
from the head coach to the coordinator to the players.
Do we expect to see them tonight come out and
with some play action passes and with some some real
determination to try to drive the ball down the field
(44:08):
or do you think that that's like, look our bread
and butter. In order to keep this game close to
the vest and the way that we want to play it,
the way we think we're gonna win it, we're gonna
have to run. And we're gonna stand by that, and
we're gonna have to run.
Speaker 9 (44:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (44:19):
I just don't think you could come out and try
to prove a point, you know, but just because I think,
as Rich said, I really agree, trying to run the
ball on the edges. That's that's where the weaknesses of
this defense. And you know, trying to prove a point
and throwing at Sauce Gardner is you know, that's that's
I didn't say that.
Speaker 4 (44:33):
I know, well, you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (44:35):
That's but that's you know, they have a good secondary
and I don't think forcing a point is gonna necessarily
win you the game tonight. I think you have to
stick to what you do. But to Paul's point, and
that was exactly you said, exactly what I was going
to jump in with.
Speaker 4 (44:49):
Rich said that.
Speaker 5 (44:49):
Jets always kind of start slow. If the Jets start fast,
the Patriots get behind. We don't know what this Patriots
team looks like when they get into like a little
ten point hole in the first quarter. They got to
learn to I threw those games, and to come back
and to produce explosive scoring plays. So you know, maybe
it'll be a good thing to see what they actually
got if the script doesn't unfold perfectly, because the first
two games, the game script is kind of unfolded to
(45:10):
their they stayed within a score to their game, and
you know they're able to stay within their game plan.
But all of a sudden, if you're down ten and
you're having to throw the ball, spread them out. I mean,
then that then it can get dice.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
Well, maybe I didn't articulate it. Well, Mike, I don't
think they're going to come out and go, you know,
empty backfield, five wide. But do you think that they
will mix it up a little bit more where there
is more play action and they try to that they're
going to try to get the receivers involved in the
game play. I mean, I hope so.
Speaker 5 (45:36):
I mean that's just look, that's just basic football. You
need to have a passing game, especially in the NFL
right now. So I hope they're more productive. I just
would say, don't don't be stupid about it. Don't be like, well,
no one thought we could pass it. So we're gonna
come out and we're going to pass it.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
And don't you feel like there's a chance that could happen. No,
I do sure really that it'll work. No, No, I
don't think they would want to do that. No. I
feel like they listen to a lot of stuff. I
feel like they listen to a lot of the quote unquote.
Speaker 5 (45:59):
Now you know what, I'll know what Paul is if
the second or third play of the game, there's a
little dump off to Tomoro.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
It's going to be a quick screen in the first
series tomorrow. This is going to be an asserted effort
to get him the ball. And I'm not telling you
I think that that's the worst idea I've ever heard,
but I that's kind of how I feel it's going
to happen like that. I think they they have sort
of responded a little bit too much to the noise
(46:28):
with some of their actions. Example that talking about we
need to get the ball downfield more. Why because everybody's
saying that, like, that's not the way they're built. Like,
I agree with Mike. If you want to start throwing
it like downfield on Sauce Gardener tonight, like to try
to prove a point, I think you're.
Speaker 4 (46:45):
Just asking for trouble.
Speaker 3 (46:46):
I mean, now, if you can dial something like a
special like they've taken a shot in both games, right,
if you want to dial something up, you know, in
some situation, see if you can sort of exploit Sauce
Gardener's aggress maybe work it against them, get a double
move or something like that.
Speaker 4 (47:04):
I'm all for it.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
But if you go in with the mindset like we're
going to go attack down the field outside the numbers,
and you know we're going to change everything up. I
think that's really not what you are.
Speaker 5 (47:15):
It's probably closer towards what you said with last year.
We're scheming something up where, you know, trying to catch
them at the right time and the right play.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
And I go back to the tell.
Speaker 3 (47:25):
You know that that comment that Jacoby Brissett made, which
I found really interesting when you said it, I felt
like we had a tell when we had a shot
play dialed up? Was that a shot at the coaches?
Was that sort of a poor choice of words?
Speaker 4 (47:40):
You know?
Speaker 3 (47:41):
I think that one of them came after the fourth
down stop around midfield. You know, you're sort of that's
a good time to take a shot, and evidently Seattle
was ready for it. I don't know, maybe they did
have a tell, but I want to take a shot
or two every game, but I don't want to get
crazy with it because I don't think that's really in
their DNA.
Speaker 4 (48:00):
Yeah. Hampton from Charlotte, North Carolina writes in Hey y'all,
hoping the Pats run it down the Jets throats tonight.
So my question is if Jacobe throws more than twenty times,
would you be surprised if he does. Do you think
that means the Patriots win or lose lose?
Speaker 5 (48:18):
Yeah, I'd say they probably lose, but you know, if
they fall behind, I wouldn't be surprised they throw it
more than twenty times.
Speaker 4 (48:23):
I just do Is that the magic number, Mike, probably in.
Speaker 5 (48:26):
The neighborhood, I think. I mean, it might be a
little bit low, but generally speaking.
Speaker 4 (48:29):
I mean, I'm sorry, is that the magic number for
a Patriots win? Not throwing the ball more than twenty ten?
Speaker 5 (48:34):
Yes, I'd like to say I hope not, because I'd
like to think that the passing game can be effective
trying to throw the ball twenty times. That doesn't seem
like a crazy number to me. That seemed fairly low.
But still, I think this team is what it is.
And it's on a short week too. You know, you
don't again three days preparation. It's not the time to
suddenly be like everyone's saying we can't do this. We're
gonna go out there and show them, like, just stick
(48:56):
to what you do. I hope you guys, hope that
the game unfolds the way you like.
Speaker 3 (49:00):
And the other part of that, to me, I mean,
unless you we talked about the big plays. All right,
So let's just say you make a couple of big
plays in the running game, then you could win a
game throwing less than twenty passes. I don't see a
lot of teams throwing the ball under twenty times and
putting enough points on the board to win.
Speaker 4 (49:18):
Yeah, makes sense.
Speaker 3 (49:19):
So like you're asking me, just blanket. You know they
throw the ball a few with it twenty times. Do
you think they win?
Speaker 4 (49:24):
No?
Speaker 3 (49:24):
I think they lost. I think that meant they didn't
have the ball a lot the other team probably had it,
got a lead, caused a lot of sacks, a lot
of pressure. The first part of the game was wasted
with the Patriots trying to run and falling behind, and
then by the time that they tried to throw it
and catch up, it was too late.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
Web Radio at Patriots dot Com, Miles from State College
rates in, I'm wearing my Mac Jones jersey to the
bar tonight five and zero against the Jets. Do you
guys think Jacobe and the receivers can do something unexpected today?
Me this, and Miles is asking two hundred yards in
a passing touchdown. Miles also asks.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
That would not be unexpected, So I think that could happen. Okay,
two hundred yards in a touchdown, Like that's a pretty
low bar.
Speaker 4 (50:08):
Sure, I haven't hit it yet. And he wants to
know who is the Patriots number one wide receiver. Do
we know the answer to that, Mario Douglas.
Speaker 5 (50:16):
Yeah, I think Douglas is there is their best receivers, the.
Speaker 4 (50:19):
Best receiver they have.
Speaker 3 (50:20):
Now, it's not like set in Stone like Mike. Mike
likes to talk about the one receiver and the X
three X y z X y z and all that stuff.
Mike loves what does it mean?
Speaker 4 (50:31):
What does it mean?
Speaker 3 (50:32):
But yeah, I mean, what was it one hundred and
seventy five yards in a touchdown?
Speaker 10 (50:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (50:36):
They could throw for two hundred yards. I mean we're
talking about pedestrian.
Speaker 4 (50:39):
I like this.
Speaker 3 (50:40):
If you want to tell me like three fifty and
three touchdowns, No, that would surprise me.
Speaker 4 (50:44):
Not yet. I like this email from Joe who wants
to know. He says, love the show. By the way,
just so we're keeping trackers scoring everything, man, should they
consider not downing kickoffs regards to the depth to give
them a couple more chances of touching the ball to
create some offensive.
Speaker 5 (50:58):
Players or some field position. A terrible question, Paul, I
hope you're not at that point yet.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
No, I would not take all out of the end zone.
All right, they're not getting to the third just asking.
Speaker 4 (51:07):
It's six point fifty one, which means it's in active time,
and that means let's go to Tamara Brown in our
studio a down the hallway. Tamara, why don't you let
us know who's in and who's out?
Speaker 8 (51:18):
Yeah, Matt, A lot of this is not a surprise.
Speaker 6 (51:20):
We knew that Bentley was going to be out city,
soow is going to be out, but Darien Lowe out.
Speaker 8 (51:24):
The surprising ones is Marco.
Speaker 6 (51:25):
Wilson and then the new dee that the Patriots just signed, Chroma.
I want to say is how it's pronounced. He is
also inactive, but that's as expected. He just got signed
to the team, what yesterday or this morning? And then
Joe Milton is the emergency quarterback. But this is a
good sign because I think Mike do So pointed this
out earlier. This probably points to trade Dracups getting some
(51:46):
time tonight, who was inactive last week. And when I
talked to Kayden Wallace, you know about the opportunity to
start at left tackle. He said, I think the vision
that the coaches want is to be to plug and
play anybody, and that includes not just him, but being
able to throw guys like trade dracups in their LeVert
if you need to basically swaping guys in and out
at at different positions even if they weren't going to
start there. You know, when we were going through training camp.
Speaker 4 (52:07):
That's you look at that as we look at a
tall task on a Thursday night, short week, and you
see that list right there, and you see that the
left side of your line is not starting tonight. Suboptimal, suboptimal, Mike,
you want to you want to pair some Jets and
actives with Tamara.
Speaker 5 (52:25):
Well, obviously is gonna say c J. Mosley is out.
He's been ruled inactive. So that's a break for the Patriots, right,
huge blow. I mean, both teams missing their their middle linebackers.
They're kind of defensive leaders. Patriots want to get the
run game going not having to deal with CJ.
Speaker 4 (52:39):
Moseley.
Speaker 5 (52:40):
I mean, I remember Bill last year talking about him
and just you know, fawning over over him and his
speed and I mean just a fantastic player for the Jets.
So that's a huge blow, especially when you consider what
the Patriots want to do Tamara.
Speaker 4 (52:52):
Life in football is not fair. But with Bentley out
and with Mosley out it they do sort of seem
to kind of cross each other off in that with
both of the team's defensive captains and guys in the
middle of star warts both missing the game tonight, that
seems like, Okay, that seems equal, doesn't it.
Speaker 6 (53:08):
Yeah, it seems pretty equal, and it's gonna be all
eyes on ray Quan McMillan and Jelani Tavai to fill
that void for Juwan Bentley and ray Quon mcmilly's. Rayquwon
McMillan seemed ready to accept that challenge. Of course he was.
You know, he was like, at the expense of my brother,
who I spend a lot of time with, especially in
the off season, him getting hurt and me being and
that being the reason why I get to go in
and play. You know, he was really emotional about that
(53:29):
in the locker room this week, But he seemed ready.
Speaker 8 (53:31):
What has he been in the league eight nine years now.
Speaker 6 (53:33):
Obviously hasn't had a lot of playing time because of
back to back season ending injuries, but this is gonna
be a big night for him. He's gonna get a
lot of reps between him and to Bay and so
I'm looking to see if they can fill that void.
Speaker 4 (53:43):
But twas the two of them, he's been a pretty
interesting story Tamara McMillan, meaning, you know, has shown a
glimpse here, popped a little bit here. You know, I
love to say that, Paul, and then injuries. You know,
it has never seemed to really get away from the injuries.
This is a great opportunity for him tonight, Tamara.
Speaker 6 (53:58):
This is a great opportunity. I mean, you're finally getting
those reps that you have been waiting and hoping for.
Especially you know, he's been on the bench, hurt, watching
the team, probably from home, not able to travel. So
now he gets to come out here and share those
reps with Jolanni to Vai and I know last week
he was kind of thrown into the fire obviously wasn't
probably expecting to play much.
Speaker 8 (54:16):
This week, all eys are going to be on him.
Speaker 6 (54:18):
There's no excuses to why nothing or nobody is ready.
So I'm hoping he has a great game because you're
filling big shoes, not only with Jolanni to not only
with Jolanni to buy, but also as a whole. You
have to stop this run between Brelan Allen and Breese
Hall and it's going to be a big challenge for
these guys who haven't had a lot of reps.
Speaker 4 (54:36):
Great stuff, Tamaron, thank you very much. We're just getting
started here a little over an hour and twenty minutes
before kickoff at Netlife Stadium. We will continue with the
pregame social in a minute. That pregame social, though, is
fueled by Duncan. And here's a question for the crowd.
If your team runs on their fans, what do the
fans run on when you kick off your date with Duncan.
(54:56):
We're with you all the way to the end zone.
Make it run to Duncan Coffee. Run of the New
England Patriots. We'll be back right after. This team's not
going anywhere.

Let's go to Booker in New York. Booker in New York,
You're next on Patriots Pregame. Hello, Hi Booker, Hey Booker.
Speaker 18 (01:00:05):
So I think the game is gonna come down to
the trenches, that it's gonna be running from both sides
and the.
Speaker 4 (01:00:11):
Ball I like it.
Speaker 5 (01:00:13):
Who do you like tonight, Booker? Yourmondra Stevenson guy or
what about Breese Hall.
Speaker 19 (01:00:18):
I'm looking like Gonzales.
Speaker 4 (01:00:20):
Actually, oh yeah, h from New York. Booker. Are you
a Jets fan?
Speaker 10 (01:00:27):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:00:30):
Right, that's a way to be Booker. Thank you very
much for your phone call. Book Love. When the kids calling. Yeah,
I do, Mike. One of the things we talked about
is we're going to deep dive into the inactive list,
and that's the cornerbacks and Marco Wilson scratch, Yeah, what
are your thoughts? Uh?
Speaker 5 (01:00:44):
You know, I go back to training camp and it
was really they were searching between Alix Austin, Marco Wilson
and whether, depending on what day it was, one of
those guys would get the chance. And a lot of
times you'd see them. Jonathan Jones was getting rest. They
put those guys in with Gonzalez and Marcus Jones and
no one ever really separated themselves. It was kind of
I think even jirob Mayo said at one point, depends
on the day. And Marco Wilson kind of got the
(01:01:06):
nod through the first two games, and he had two
pass interference penalties, a big one last week on third
down that you know, it renewed them and kept them going.
I think they eventually scored a touchdown. So interesting, just
an interesting move. Alex Austin gonna get a chance. Alex
Austin's got a little bit of size. We talked about
the lack of size maybe in the cornerback group, So
maybe that's part of it, but it seems like today
Alex Austin gonna get a chance. You just hate when
(01:01:29):
your third outside corner maybe technically your fourth corner, but
he gets in there for a snap, a third and
long kind of thing, and you know he's going to
get targeted and then either gives.
Speaker 4 (01:01:37):
Up the catch or gives up a penalty.
Speaker 5 (01:01:38):
So watch for Aaron Rodgers to maybe try to exploit
Alex Austin or at least challenge him early on.
Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
So this is Alex Austin's opportunity.
Speaker 5 (01:01:45):
Yeah, and I think he's played a little bit here
and there. I'm not sure exactly the snap totals, but
you know, he had some promising play last year, and
I mean he was still he's still I think this
is just his second year. Still, he's still a young kid.
Had an interception last year, I remember coming into the
team late. So opportunity for him, no doubt. Guys down
the depth chart a little bit alm lazard, maybe he
gets stuck on him from time to time, but overall,
(01:02:08):
I would expect Patriot's probably gonna go heavy. I don't
know if they're gonna be playing a ton of multi corners,
especially with the safeties that they have with with Jalen
Hawkins is pretty good third corner, third safety, I should say.
So we'll see how it all plays out, but definitely
something for the Jets to think about with with Alex
Austin out there.
Speaker 4 (01:02:23):
Web radio at Patriots dot com and Jeffrey from Canada
writes in I'm going to be honest, the only thing
that gets me excited for this game is a very
slim chance that in some way, somehow Drake May gets
to play. Another emailer had said earlier, which I didn't
read on the air, he doesn't think that there's gonna
be a lot to worry about when May plays, because
if Brissett is going to continue to get creamed like
(01:02:44):
he has, it's just a matter of time. So he
thinks without May that the Patriots are gonna get embarrassed.
I would disagree with that. But let's talk about the
May watch. And it's not this week, obviously, but it
is a verbial next man up, and he's only one
play away, and we've seen through for the first two
(01:03:05):
weeks that play might be around sooner rather than later.
Speaker 5 (01:03:08):
Yeah, I think the key stat we talked about on
unfiltered this week that Evan Lazarre had was that Jacoby
Brissett I think has one turnover worthy play and he
has no explosive plays, so that right there is essentially
net neutral. I don't want to say net neutral, might
be a little bit below net neutral because of the
one turnover worthy play, but no turnovers yet. For me,
I think if it's you know, and we talk about injuries,
but if it's not that it's going to be interceptions
(01:03:32):
and turnovers, that those start happening for Jacoby Brissett and
then it becomes not net neutral anymore. I think that's
when you'll start to hit the drum beat for Drake
May a little bit more. One more point on it though.
Last week we heard about what his first week was
like behind the scenes, and it sounds like the team
is still making a lot of effort to get him
ready committed to the player. They're not, you know, he's
not an afterthought in practice. He's getting reps, so everybody
(01:03:55):
knows it's eventually gonna go to Drake May.
Speaker 4 (01:03:57):
I think it's just a question of how, and for.
Speaker 5 (01:03:59):
Me, it's the most likely mode right now is either
injuries or Jacoby Prissett starts to become a turnover machine
and doesn't produce explosive plays. Like I said, that's probably
when you got to start to think about it.
Speaker 4 (01:04:09):
So they haven't turned it over in the first two weeks, Mike,
and I think part of that is also with the
coaching staff. And to me, a really good example of
that is the infamous play calling after the Gibson run
that got him and first down at the twenty five
four forty left to go in the game. They went
(01:04:29):
really conservative there where I think Seattle might have been
on their heels, and you wonder if that was a
chance maybe to take a shot. They were playing the
clock and the Seahawks at that point time, and I'm curious,
were they trying not to lose rather letting Jacoby maybe
be a little aggressive at that point?
Speaker 5 (01:04:44):
Yeah, I mean, and I also would flash up the
performance the play calling at the end of the first half,
where it was it was a run and then two
throws that stop the clock, you give the ball back.
Speaker 4 (01:04:53):
It was just I mean, let's.
Speaker 5 (01:04:54):
Call it what it is.
Speaker 6 (01:04:55):
It was.
Speaker 5 (01:04:55):
It was kind of poor management. Poor clock management enabled
Seattle to get three points. We know what a big
swing that can be when you have a possession at
the end of the sight first half and then you
get the ball back at the first at the second half.
So look, I think this is a new coaching staff.
This is Alex van Pelt's first time, so I think
there is a little bit of room for learning sure,
knowing when to be aggressive, knowing when to say, let's
(01:05:17):
just get out of this half without giving the ball
back to them. So hopefully we see some strides today,
but I think we're all looking for some shots today.
A couple of big plays would really be just what
the doctor ordered.
Speaker 4 (01:05:27):
Web radio at Patriots dot com as is al from
Dripping Springs, Texas. I'm not gonna lie to you haven't
heard that time before. Hey, you all love the show.
Why are we not seeing any quick slants? Slants to Edelman, Welker,
Am and Doola were a staple in the Patriots offense.
It seems to me would get the ball Jacobe's Hans quickly.
Do you think Pop Douglas would have success with slants?
(01:05:50):
And I do think all of us on the other side,
those of us not in the game, not in the
meeting room, not with the coaching staff, I think We've
heard a lot of that this week.
Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
Mike.
Speaker 4 (01:05:59):
Yeah, I think the quick game has really been more
about the tight ends. And I agree. I agree.
Speaker 5 (01:06:03):
It seems like there'll be some lay up plays there
if they're able to get him with with some slat
slants inside. I mean even with Jaylen Polku, I think
you know, just has some quick explosive ability to separate quickly.
We'd like to see them take advantage of it. We're
pondering all week, why, you know, can't Jacoby seem to
find Pop Douglas. And I mean even Jacoby this summer
said kind of getting used to throwing to a smaller
(01:06:23):
guy like him, He's not really used to it, And
which is weird to me because it doesn't really occur
to you that, you know, throwing to a guy whether
he's up big or little.
Speaker 4 (01:06:30):
You know, if he's open, he should be open.
Speaker 5 (01:06:31):
But clearly that's something they're still working through. But any
attempt you can get to just get these guys involved.
I remember a couple of weeks ago Brady talking about
I forget where it was he talks everywhere now, right, Matt, Like,
you can't avail he's available, you can't not see a
Tom Brady thing. I love it, but just talking about
the importance of getting guys involved early, and you know,
especially receivers, especially guys who have an ego they want
(01:06:52):
to play. I mean you just look at I mean
even watching Pop Douglas run motions and it's like, man,
it's got to be exhausting to be run in motions,
run and go routes, you know. I mean, that's what
Brady pointed out was these guys are doing a lot
of work when the ball isn't even coming their way.
You need to get the ball to them. You need
to make them feel that they're involved. So I would
expect they'll do some of that tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:07:10):
Probably.
Speaker 5 (01:07:11):
There's a fine line though, between getting them involved and
trying to force the issue too much, So hopefully they
can walk that line.
Speaker 4 (01:07:16):
And our colleague doing one of his shows right now,
I think disagrees with us, Mike, but I couldn't agree
with you more. I again, I don't think they're coming
out five wide and chuck and duck. That's not a
prescription for success for them. I don't think that they're
listening to KNITW radio or the fans or anything like that.
But I think when Girod Meyo comes out and says that,
I think he's he's it's a critical eye towards himself
(01:07:38):
because the buck stops with him. Yeah, we need to
get these guys more involved, and what easier way to
do that than a couple of bubble screens, maybe a
slant here there, Maybe those are chain movers that they
get going on. That opens up to play action a
little bit, and I think just makes their offense a
whole heck of a lot less predictable. I'd expect to
see some of that tonight. Yeah, I hope so.
Speaker 5 (01:07:58):
I Mean the great frontier for this offense to try
to tackle is getting their passing game going and you know,
showing some potential. I mean, the running game has been
really solid. I mean, I think it's better than it
did last year. I mean, certainly they limped to the
finish line with Ezekiel Elliott and Stevenson was banged up.
They were kind of hanging on by a thread there
at the end with their personnel. But uh, you know,
(01:08:19):
it's just a it's hard because you think they have
an opportunity really to attack the Jets a little bit
with the run game tonight. So I'd still expect to
see a heavy dose of that.
Speaker 4 (01:08:26):
Eighty five to five Pats five hundred the number Eric
and New Jersey where the game is being played tonight
in New Jersey. Eric, You're next on the Patriots pregame show.
Speaker 20 (01:08:34):
Hey, how you guys doing today?
Speaker 6 (01:08:36):
Great?
Speaker 4 (01:08:36):
How are you sir?
Speaker 18 (01:08:37):
Good?
Speaker 20 (01:08:38):
So I got two matchups that I think has kind
of been overlooked up our linebackers, but they really haven't
been tested by a team yet with you know, with
running backs that could really be dual.
Speaker 15 (01:08:47):
Threat catching out the backfield.
Speaker 20 (01:08:49):
Yes, I'm definitely eager to see that matchup, kind of
to yoursaults on that.
Speaker 18 (01:08:52):
And also the wide.
Speaker 20 (01:08:54):
Receiver matchup Jonathan Jones or Mike Williams. Yep, I really
don't like that matchup. And then even Allen was all
on maybe Marcus Jones and this blot. Obviously they have
we have that speed there, but just the way that
I've seen Jackie Smith a few kind of Marcus Jones
in that slot was dispositioning and I just think, again
we have that high issue with Mike Williams.
Speaker 9 (01:09:12):
I think he would get ugly.
Speaker 18 (01:09:13):
But I'll take it off.
Speaker 4 (01:09:14):
The line and thanks for your phone call eric just
picking up on Marcus Jones. I think he's been pretty
competitive defensively.
Speaker 5 (01:09:20):
He is not perfect, but he's he's quick. I mean,
he can stick with guys. You know, It's just it's
the size thing. I mean, Alan Lazard, I had to
look it up exactly, mean sixty five to twenty seven. So,
I mean, as much as we're talking about seize miss
matches with Mike Williams, that's a seize miss match too.
Speaker 10 (01:09:34):
No.
Speaker 5 (01:09:34):
I wonder that's going to be something that they try
to target today.
Speaker 3 (01:09:38):
I agree with your point, Matt. Sorry to just jump
back in about Marcus Jones. I think he's been really
good in the first two games. I think he's been
competitive in his coverage and he's been very physical when
it's tackling. I think he's been the best defensive back
in the first two games.
Speaker 10 (01:09:51):
Right.
Speaker 4 (01:09:51):
But the first point that the caller made, I think
is the one that we've all addressed already, and that's
Hall against the linebacker. That is not a matchup in
the Patriots favor. No, no no.
Speaker 5 (01:10:00):
And I think you know Paul said, and I'd agree
with him that Tovey's a little bit surprising with his athleticism.
I think he's made a couple of plays in coverage
over the last couple of years. But still, I just
think Breese Hall is an outstanding player and that's a
matchup I would be looking to test any chance I
can get. You know, Ray Kwa McMillan Samara pointed out,
he hasn't played a lot. I mean, he was out
all last year. Is he rusty? Is he ready to
(01:10:21):
play a bunch of snaps? Are they ready to throw
him in and play him a bunch? So I would
certainly test those matchups, and the size factor against the
cornerbacks is a big one.
Speaker 4 (01:10:30):
Webb Radio at Patrins dot Com, Paul, this came in
while you were out. Mike and I talked a little
bit about it. But Johnny in Madtown Rights and I
largely agree with your take that it's not in their
DNA to be a team that takes more shots down
the field than they have. But I do think it's
a positive thing that Mayo wants to try to get
the ball to guys like Douglas. I wouldn't mind seeing
Marcus Jones on offense if they want to try to
(01:10:51):
get tricky. But my question is if they don't want
to be a downfield heavy team. This is the interesting
part of the question. How do they develop the passing
game in a way that compliments the receivers they have
and their skill sets, And that seems to be the
sixty four thousand dollars question.
Speaker 3 (01:11:07):
Well, the problem is Alex Van Pelt's system does want
some downfield passing. He wants to run and take shots,
but they haven't been able to do it. And I
think Mike is right. You know, you think about those
Cleveland offenses and not listen. I don't pretend to be
the expert on this stuff, but just you know your
mind's eye, it's Nick Chubb and it's seam routes to
(01:11:30):
David Njoku, it's go routes to Mari Cooper, deep overs
and crosses. Elijah Moore is a very gifted kind of
slot type receiver or maybe a Z you know he
might be. He's not an ex Cooper's the act. Hooper
drives the boat. We got him to smile. We got
(01:11:50):
him to smile, We got he says, we're not funny.
We three, We three don't make fun of my host
sense of humor. So that's the way I remember them
when you get in Cleveland, Mike, right like trying to
take some shots. I think that's how Van Pelt wants
to play.
Speaker 4 (01:12:05):
I just don't think they have the ability to do
it right now.
Speaker 5 (01:12:07):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's and the question is how
good you have to run to do it, because you
think if.
Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
You can't run any better than yeah, I mean when
they fourth in the league, you can't do it. You
can't run any better.
Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
Than That's what's what's concerning in the line, and it's
the receivers. Right web radio at Patriots dot Com. Terrific
emailer here from Travis and West Virginia who writes, Hello, friends.
Sometimes I think you guys overblow the this is how
we want to play narrative. I don't think the coaching
staff shits around a week uttering over and over about
how we want to play. I'm not saying they don't
(01:12:37):
have a game plan, but I think you guys talk
about how we want to play more than they do.
Maybe you can ask your Rod if his goal is
life is to win thirteen to twelve. I bet he
says no.
Speaker 3 (01:12:49):
I don't know about the score, but I can give
you at least twenty examples. Since the start of the
spring with Girodmeyo has told us how he wants to play. Yeah,
we're going to run the ball. We're going to lean
on our defense and be solid on special teams. He
said it over and over and over. He answered a
(01:13:12):
question one day in training camp about the new kickoff
rules by saying, we want to pin them down there,
lean on our defense, and have our running game, and
that's how we want to play. It wasn't even a
question about how you want to play. It was a
question about the new kickoff rules, and he answered about
how they want to play. So I would strongly disagree
(01:13:32):
that the coaches don't sit around identifying how they want
to play.
Speaker 4 (01:13:37):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:13:37):
I'm not telling you they want to win thirteen twelve
instead of twenty one to twenty or whatever, but that's
how they want to play.
Speaker 5 (01:13:43):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's part of you're trying
to instill in your team. We're all on the same page.
We understand how we want to play the game. This
is our identity. I think it's one thing though to
say what you want to do, and it's another thing
to do.
Speaker 4 (01:13:56):
Actually, so good point. We'll see Brandon Knight writes, and
when I played quarterback, I want to bring in the
Jimmy Williams, Joe Amersino point right in here, right Uh.
Throwing throwing to shorter receivers would sometimes cause the ball
to float because you have to get it over lineman.
But it has to have the touch and trajectory to
(01:14:16):
fault to them. The tall the quarterback is the less
of a problem it is. Tom was so tall he
was already able to see and throw over the lineman.
I'm going to categorically disagree with. I mean, I don't
think you want five eight quarterbacks, but I think we're
okay here as far as what's preset, Yeah, I don't know.
All right, six to three Pats five hundred the number.
Kyle in Florida, You're next on the Patriots pregame social Hi, Kyle, Hello, Kyle, Hello, Matt.
(01:14:48):
You got an effect for me on that?
Speaker 13 (01:14:49):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:14:51):
All right, Kendall in North Carolina. Kendall in North Carolina,
You're next on the Patriots pregame show, Fuel by Duncan, Hawaii. Kendall, Hey,
Kennell of six to four.
Speaker 5 (01:15:01):
By the way, oh.
Speaker 3 (01:15:04):
Oh, Kendall said, but that was real Kendall started talking
and then he.
Speaker 4 (01:15:07):
Just dropped, oh for two, I never had that one before.
Job for good job, Hardy. He didn't like how Matt
welcomed him. He's like, well, screw this guy. I'm not
talking right, okay. John from the Cape writes, I appreciate
coach Mayo saying he wants to push the ball down
the field, but I'd rather see them get the intermediate
pass game going in the ten to fifteen yard area.
Wide receiver been opened on tape, So maybe he's one
of those all twenty two jockeys. It's a matter of
(01:15:29):
protection to give him enough time for the deep passing game, thoughts.
Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
I just want anything in the passing to be successful.
They haven't had anything successful so far in the passing game. Yeah,
I mean even the the eight for one oh nine
or whatever it was for Henry, with.
Speaker 4 (01:15:44):
The exceptions that one thread down.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
That screen was was awesome. They had a quick out
where they kind of stacked Hooper and Henry and Henry
kind of ran off the coverage and I'm sorry, Hooper
ran off the coverage and Henry caught a third down
pass underneath bang. Other than that, yeah, most of the
stuff was kind of like run for your life, Jacoby
and oh, Henry, you know, we'll get it to him.
(01:16:10):
I think nothing in the passing game has been smooth.
Speaker 5 (01:16:12):
Yeah, I agree, And I think there's I mean, maybe
we're talking about the same player. I remember one just
a little in from Henry on a third and law
that they actually hit.
Speaker 4 (01:16:21):
That was close. Maybe they didn't even pick it up.
Speaker 5 (01:16:22):
But you're right, I mean, it's it's been mostly the
tight ends in the passing game and you just you
got to get the ball to your fast the touchdown.
The touchdown was a good that was a good play
in the past. I mean, I you know, news flash
Perlo said the touchdown was a good play in the past,
But that was not like well, you know, like the
forty five yard run was a good play too. There's
nothing about it that was like other than just an
(01:16:44):
incredible individual effort by Antonio Gibson, like you're not die
on it up that way.
Speaker 3 (01:16:49):
That play that they had, you know, I think I
think Polk lined up in the right side your slot
clear across and got wide open and uh and percent
was right on time, put it in the window.
Speaker 4 (01:17:02):
Bang touchdown. That's more plays like that, ye yeah, some
demonstrated ability in the passing game. They can't continue without
some sort of success there, Matt, let's go to the
over unders.
Speaker 1 (01:17:12):
Please, it's time for this week's edition of over unders.
Speaker 4 (01:17:20):
Uh do we care about? We want to want to
let you guys know what the records are? Should I
tell you and everybody else that I first don't do so?
Speaker 3 (01:17:27):
I'll tell you that we all went two and four
last week, so it was another tough week for for
all of us. But no Socks continues to set the
pace at eight and four right after his perfect week one.
I am in second at five and seven, and Mike
is in last at.
Speaker 4 (01:17:45):
Correct. Say, oh wow, correct? I could never say that.
All right, let's kick things off with Jacoby Brissett passing
and rushing yards. Wow, we're gonna combine them now, oh
man numbers by draft kings Matt Morreau, all right, one
eight one and a hey one eight one and a
hey for both passing and rushing yards for Jacoby Brissett.
I will kick things off surprisingly by going over. Do
(01:18:09):
I go down?
Speaker 11 (01:18:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:18:13):
Yeah? What do you got?
Speaker 5 (01:18:14):
I wish I could do it, but I'm going under.
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
I'm just gonna take the over just because I refuse
to take all the unders on everything.
Speaker 4 (01:18:23):
Yeah, when I say take the over, as we're watching
the warm ups going on right now, you see the
players on the field and there's Jacoby Brissett warming up,
I say over. And I don't like why I'm saying it,
because I think they're gonna have to be playing from behind,
which is gonna oh, which is gonna increase the passing yards?
Next Aaron Rodgers passing TDS one and a half, one
(01:18:44):
and a half, who's first. I'll leave this one off.
I'll take the over.
Speaker 3 (01:18:51):
I don't think they'll have a tremendous amount of success
running the ball, so I think they're gonna have to
throw it in and two reasonable number?
Speaker 4 (01:18:58):
Yeah two? Last week? That's you, Matt, Okay, all right,
over over, somebody's gonna tell you what week by week
five or six. Put a chart up in front of
me so I can tell you what. I'll just tell you.
It goes Mike Paul.
Speaker 3 (01:19:12):
That's Matt, Matt, Mike and then Matt.
Speaker 4 (01:19:16):
That's fine.
Speaker 5 (01:19:16):
Did you ever do a fantasy drafting over snake with
the snake?
Speaker 4 (01:19:19):
Yeah, I hate that.
Speaker 5 (01:19:22):
I'm over on Aaron Rodgers pass I'm gonna use myself.
I'm gonna go under on that one. Just try to
make some ground.
Speaker 4 (01:19:28):
Maybe they rushing touchdowns, Okay, next longest completion either team
at thirty five and a half. Kind of an interesting
number there, Mike one.
Speaker 5 (01:19:38):
Yeah, I'm gonna go uh. I'm gonna go under on
this one. I think it's uh. You gotta keep stuff
in front of you. Big plays not coming from the
Patriots probably, so I'm gonna go under on that one.
Speaker 3 (01:19:48):
Last week I emphatically took the under and got burned
very early in the game.
Speaker 4 (01:19:53):
Thanks Kyle Tug.
Speaker 3 (01:19:56):
That's like Gonzales doesn't even play.
Speaker 4 (01:19:59):
Yeah, thank Kyle Duger. I'm gonna take the under. Three
for three on the U, three for three on the U.
Next up, Austin Hooper receiving yards. Another interesting one that
you both out of here, mister Marine Corps ten and
a half. I think I have to go under until
(01:20:21):
you demonstrated why would you ever go under? I'm going under, right,
it's a great number of DraftKings. I'm gonna go over.
Why not?
Speaker 5 (01:20:29):
Hey, we love Austin Hooper. Here he drives the boat.
He's our our Jaws player of the game.
Speaker 4 (01:20:33):
Every day.
Speaker 5 (01:20:34):
So I'm gonna take the over for Austin Hooper.
Speaker 4 (01:20:36):
Yeah, me too.
Speaker 3 (01:20:37):
I like the corners for the Jets, so I think
it might be another day that the tight ends are
going to have to be a big part of the
passing game.
Speaker 4 (01:20:45):
Next is Joey Sly kicking points and DraftKings has this
one pegged at a very intriguing six and a hey,
do you get three? Who's this? Who's up?
Speaker 3 (01:20:57):
I'm gonna take the over. I think he's had the
over six and a half in both games, right, So trends.
A wise better once told me you follow the trends.
Speaker 5 (01:21:06):
Hmm, under under, I'm gonna go over.
Speaker 4 (01:21:11):
I'm gonna go over.
Speaker 5 (01:21:12):
A couple of field goals, a touchdown, extra points would
be enough.
Speaker 4 (01:21:15):
Okay, And last, but not least, I just I think
this is last, right, Marine Corps thirty eight and a
hey for the total, thirty eight and a half for
the total.
Speaker 5 (01:21:24):
I think this big deuce last Thursday night. It's hard
to go, hard to go over. Yeah, I'm gonna I'm
gonna go under on this yep.
Speaker 3 (01:21:33):
Yeah, yeah, sorry, I'm gonna take the under as well.
Another wise man told me to follow the trends.
Speaker 4 (01:21:41):
Is lost last week? The game went over last week?
Legal gam gambling advice? Or was this like a guy
on the corner telling you.
Speaker 3 (01:21:46):
I guy used to work with the Herald. When you're done,
you go home.
Speaker 19 (01:21:49):
That was it.
Speaker 5 (01:21:50):
He's also a sharp.
Speaker 3 (01:21:53):
I don't yeah, probably what do they know? Probably in
this day and age, what do they know? What do
the sharps know?
Speaker 4 (01:21:58):
So those are your over for this week. As we're
watching warm ups at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, let's
go back into the Studioway confines and rejoin with Tamara Brown.
What do you got tomorrow?
Speaker 6 (01:22:11):
Well, right now, you see Joe Milton having a great time.
The jams must be great out there at MetLife. But
what I wanted to talk about is I see David
Andrews out here, and it just now reminded me of
what he said about Kayden Wallace in the locker room
when he was asked about him. He said, I'm ready
for him to cut loose. He sounded super excited about
the rookie getting his chance to start at left guard
in place of Venderian Low. And I also wanted to
(01:22:33):
note too, I know we always talked about Jabrill Pepper's homecoming.
Speaker 8 (01:22:36):
He's from New Jersey. He's super excited to be back.
Speaker 6 (01:22:38):
But Kayden Wallace told me that he actually went to
high school in New Jersey. He has a bunch of
friends playing on the Jets. He has a lot of
family and friends coming to the game to watch him.
So this would be a great first start at left
tackle for him.
Speaker 4 (01:22:49):
Oh it's great, nugget.
Speaker 5 (01:22:51):
Yeah, as he watched Drake May working on the there
you go, matth Those those are the tunnel screens right there.
Speaker 4 (01:22:56):
He's working on it really quick.
Speaker 3 (01:22:57):
So has there been some hair screen?
Speaker 1 (01:23:01):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:23:01):
Well, you'd have to see what the blocking serious? Seriously,
what was there been talk about May possibly playing in
this game?
Speaker 4 (01:23:11):
Not that I've heard, not that I've heard. Tell me,
why do you bring that up?
Speaker 3 (01:23:17):
I had someone text me asking if there was any
validity to it, and it was not a member of
the media.
Speaker 5 (01:23:23):
There was a big conversation on Patriots Playbook yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
Okay, well, there you go. So maybe there's something.
Speaker 5 (01:23:27):
Like that the rook the rook putting it out there.
Speaker 4 (01:23:29):
Huh Okay, I don't know. I mean, I have no
reason to think.
Speaker 3 (01:23:31):
I just would think that, like you could make I
could hear an argument that would be stronger for for
virtually every single spot than tonight, like a short week,
banged up offensive line. Yeah, like against that defense. To me,
like wouldn't make a lot of sense, but it makes
no sense.
Speaker 4 (01:23:52):
And a little bit and I want to follow up
something that Tomorrow was talking about when she talks about
Wallace and dude, she were in the locker room the
other day. He's sem kind of calm, cool and collected
a little bit for Kie. Yeah, yeah, he just thought
was decent.
Speaker 5 (01:24:04):
No, he's uh, he's he's got a good way about him,
calm and and like I said, he's just a very
likable guy, both him and Robinson, the two rookies. So yeah,
it's pretty cool, like he's getting to play. Like Tamara said,
that's a that's good info about him. You know some
hometown folks. That always helps a little bit. So pulling
for him, I just I just wonder, is he really
going to.
Speaker 4 (01:24:24):
Be a left tackle?
Speaker 5 (01:24:24):
I mean they started with Paul Correct me if I'm
wrong here because I'm a little hazy, but I think
like they started him at left tackle, like in the
early early, early, early early going of.
Speaker 4 (01:24:32):
Of the offseason.
Speaker 5 (01:24:33):
They gave him some just some initial kind of time there,
and then I kind of he.
Speaker 4 (01:24:37):
Definitely played everyone.
Speaker 3 (01:24:38):
Yeah, I mean, I'm not gonna get bogged down in
semantics whether or not he started there, but he definitely
played some left tackle early and.
Speaker 4 (01:24:44):
He didn't last very long there.
Speaker 5 (01:24:45):
He just doesn't really look like a left tackle to me,
But who knows, I mean Michael when he doesn't really
look like a tackle either, and he's okay.
Speaker 3 (01:24:51):
I think so, you know, and I guess I'm alone
in this. I think he struggles in past protection and
I've noticed that in practice. I've noticed it in you know,
the small pockets that he's been out there. But I
think it'll be sometimes it's a little better when you
just sort of settle in and you're starting. Yeah, you
don't have to worry about like.
Speaker 4 (01:25:12):
Who's behind you. Yeah, he's he's it.
Speaker 3 (01:25:15):
And I do agree with the way you guys talked
about his demeanor. He talked about feeling more and more
confident in every practice. He feels like he improves every day.
Speaker 4 (01:25:24):
Says a lot of things that I think Belichick would
be looking for. So to follow up something with Tamarrow
as she's talking about the offensive line. If that heart?
Oh is it Jeff Ulrich, who's that hard Ow defensive
coordinator for the Jets, the former.
Speaker 3 (01:25:35):
San Francisco's defensive coordinator.
Speaker 4 (01:25:38):
That's not a heart. Oh yeah, I don't think DeMarcus
Covington is.
Speaker 3 (01:25:40):
Oh God, did you hear his first press conference the
last week? I like DeMarcus at any event. I didn't
say you didn't like him tomorrow. Andy hard is a heart. Oh,
I like him a lot.
Speaker 5 (01:25:50):
If you're sitting in your backyard on the big screen
calling place, you're a heart open in a good way,
in a good way.
Speaker 20 (01:25:55):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:25:56):
So Tamara. If you're the Jets defensive coordinator and Quinn
william is standing there and you're going, where am I
going to put him tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:26:03):
Isn't he right in front of Kayden Wallace and Michael
Jordan Quinn Williams.
Speaker 5 (01:26:07):
Yeah, No, he's in the inside. Yeah, he's a tackle. Well,
that's that's what I was gonna say. Man, is that
I mentioned will.
Speaker 4 (01:26:13):
Him around a little bit?
Speaker 10 (01:26:14):
Though?
Speaker 4 (01:26:15):
Well, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:26:16):
He's not as good an edge rusher as like these
guys are.
Speaker 4 (01:26:19):
Will McDonald.
Speaker 5 (01:26:19):
I like three SATs passing downs. I think that's a
little like it's weird because it feels like at.
Speaker 4 (01:26:24):
Ping pongs to me.
Speaker 5 (01:26:25):
I think Will McDonald's a good matchup against Kayden Wallace
because he's fast and he can try to challenge how
quickly Kateen Wallace can get back. But in the run game,
I like Wallace kind of going forward against will McDonald.
Speaker 4 (01:26:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:26:36):
I think that's a key on the edges there.
Speaker 4 (01:26:38):
Tomorrow. You got something.
Speaker 6 (01:26:40):
Oh, I didn't know if my mic was open or not.
Speaker 8 (01:26:44):
I was gonna say, was.
Speaker 6 (01:26:46):
It Cole Strange who actually got benched when Patriots played
the Jets and it was going against Quinn Williams.
Speaker 3 (01:26:53):
Yeah, that could that could be. I know, you know
the lineup a.
Speaker 8 (01:26:56):
Few times going against him.
Speaker 4 (01:26:58):
No, you might.
Speaker 3 (01:26:59):
You might have that one exactly right, you know. I listen,
quinnin Williams has done that to a lot of guys.
Speaker 9 (01:27:04):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:27:04):
DeForest Buckner is another guy that gave them a lot
of trouble boys, you know, in the past, those interior guys.
David Andrews has struggled with some of those guys too.
Speaker 4 (01:27:14):
Sure tough matchup. Web radio Patriots dot Com writer writes
in it says, Hello, Patriots pregame show crew, First time
rid a longtime listener. As I look at the NFL today,
the entire league is built completely around the passing game,
with the run game complementing the latter. Is it fear
to be concerned? It seems like the Patriots are currently
built the other way around, stressing the run with the
(01:27:38):
passing game being complimentary.
Speaker 5 (01:27:40):
I mean, I think this is this is pretty standard
for this kind of offense.
Speaker 4 (01:27:43):
I think this is what they want to do. I
mean I think I mean, probably even going back to.
Speaker 5 (01:27:47):
Mike Shanahan in the wide zone of you know, really
trying to get the defense on their heels, and.
Speaker 3 (01:27:51):
You could say San Francisco does it like that? They
want to run the ball and then they want to throw.
Speaker 4 (01:27:55):
Off of that.
Speaker 3 (01:27:56):
Yeah, regardless of how they do it, you know, we
can get bogged down and all that. They need to
be more productive. And it's the bottom line, you know,
it's yeah, it's not they need to run the ball better,
they need to throw the ball. They need to score
more points. And it's been since the early part of
the twenty one season that they've scored enough points in
(01:28:18):
my view. You know, it was kind of around the
time of that that that Thursday night Atlanta game. In
that wind game, the three nothing to get like. They
haven't scored enough points since in my view on a
consistent basis.
Speaker 4 (01:28:31):
How many they hang on Jacksonville. That's their whole team
was out of COVID.
Speaker 3 (01:28:35):
You know when they had twenty seven guys didn't make
the trip.
Speaker 4 (01:28:39):
Eight five five, pass five hundred the number. Kendall in
North Carolina and you're next up on the Patriots pregame show. Hi, Kendall,
Hello Kendall. We're gonna make it happen one of these Hello. Hello,
oh man, I can't even say Operator era, Matt, but
I don't believe it really is Operator era. It's all right,
starting to get a little real. Yeah, Jose in Texas.
(01:29:01):
How about you, Jose, You're next in the Patriots Free
Game Show.
Speaker 21 (01:29:09):
Hey, guys, So growing on his skin was kind of
bringing up Kethon White today. I see that he's doing
pretty good. But I like what you guys think of saying,
what only two and a half sacks? He's kind of
do you think he's just gonna go back to the meame.
I think he's kind of a standout player.
Speaker 18 (01:29:31):
Thanks Day.
Speaker 3 (01:29:32):
He actually has four sacks on the season. He's played
very well in the two games. I still think he's
more of a power guy than sort of that pure
edge rusher, but he is, Mike. He showed a little
bit he has in both regards.
Speaker 5 (01:29:46):
Right he has absolutely no I think he's there. He's
their best pass rusher right now, and I would really
try to. You know, Matt, you talked about moving guys
around to take advantage of matchups. I think he's a
key piece today, and especially up the middle getting quick pressure.
We know Rogers wants to get the ball out, so
I forget what the exact number is, but one of
those advanced stats was that Keon White's been getting pressure quick,
so I think it's it's a.
Speaker 4 (01:30:06):
Huge key today.
Speaker 5 (01:30:07):
He could be that key guy that gets pressure up
the middle, that forces Rogers off the spot. You know,
try to make him make plays on the mover, you know,
just don't let him get comfortable in the pocket. That's
the biggest thing. Establish it early. Don't let him sit
back there and think, all right, these guys aren't going
to get to me.
Speaker 4 (01:30:20):
I can. I can sit back here all day and
pick him apart.
Speaker 19 (01:30:21):
Paul.
Speaker 4 (01:30:22):
One of the things that you and I have talked
about off the air is well, we love what Keyon
White has been able to do so far through two games.
It takes him a while to get there, Like, he's
not your instant blur off the edge kind of a
guy that's gonna get there quick. You're gonna have to
scheme him up a little bit, or he's gonna have
to overpower somebody in order to get there.
Speaker 3 (01:30:39):
He affects the pocket, he certainly, and I do think
that he's been he's been good. My thing with him, like,
I don't want to get caught up in the number
of sacks because I think he's played really well. I'm
not necessarily going to say, like, well, you know, he's
got four sacks whatever, even if you know, I'm not
even willing to say like fifteen. But like, he can
be a really good player if he doesn't get any
(01:31:00):
more sacks, Like that's not necessarily what I think his
strength is. And to Matt's point, you know, some of
his sacks are just hustle plays where he tracks the
quarterback down before the line of scrimmage, and those are
valuable because instead of the quarterback making yards, he's he's
not he's loosing this negative plays so I do think
that he was pretty good. I thought he was better
(01:31:20):
in the Seattle game than he was in the Cincinnati
game in terms of getting to the quarterback quicker.
Speaker 4 (01:31:25):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:31:27):
But yeah, yeah, he's a guy that I you know,
Mike and I have sort of we've been kind of
holding out.
Speaker 4 (01:31:33):
We wanted to, we were waiting to see more. I
think we've we've seen more.
Speaker 5 (01:31:36):
No, definitely, and I and like, you know, like I
said before, it was just because you're not seeing that,
you're not focusing on a guy, you're not watching the
one on ones. A lot of people you know, really
focused on key On White on the one on ones
this summer, and we're really high on him, you know,
I just I didn't see it initially, and so I
want to. I mean, I love the defense, and I love,
you know, guy who can affect the passer and do
what he does a number of things moving all up
(01:31:56):
and down the line. I mean it's you know, you're
just you're kind of imagining what he will be like
with Barmore. I mean, those two guys inside that would
you're really cooking with gas then and you know, then
you put an outside edge rusher that can really challenge
the edge, which I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:32:09):
I don't think they have.
Speaker 5 (01:32:10):
I mean O'Shane Zimmenez went on, I r he hadn't
really done much anyway. But you know, I haven't seen
much out of josh Ucha. I know, he's another guy
that some of the stats Paul and I were talking about,
you know, point to him being affected. So far, I
haven't really seen him be effective.
Speaker 3 (01:32:23):
You know what's funny about zim Is, I didn't I
didn't really notice him at all, and the like the
t and training camp practice and like it seemed like
a lot of days people were highlighting him. And then
I didn't really notice him much in the preseason games.
And I didn't notice him get hurt either. I didn't
either know, like I didn't even know he was on
the field. Like I feel like for some reason, I
(01:32:45):
just have not seen that guy at all.
Speaker 4 (01:32:48):
Meaning and now you know.
Speaker 5 (01:32:50):
Obviously he was mostly a special teams kind of guy backup.
That's that's the role he's been in. So the new
you know, Tamara mentioned the new guy that they just got.
You know, he not active, but they're they're scrambling for
some depth there on the edge.
Speaker 4 (01:33:03):
Didn't Ox weard ninety three. Yes, that's what I noticed.
I was offended that ninety three was given to a
pedestrian player. Oh okay, you know, are you? I mean,
are there any other numbers that you?
Speaker 3 (01:33:15):
Are you, in all seriousness one of those guys that
like you get a I mean, can we take twelve
out of this equation? For Yeah, I don't think Matt
Smith should be wearing eighty seven. Okay, so you have
a lot of those numbers.
Speaker 4 (01:33:27):
Not a lot, but I would say that let's let's see,
let's see some other numbers be worn before we get
to see more and gronk, you know, pro Football Hall
of Famers, how about that? Okay? Fair enough? I mean
I don't I don't hate it. I don't hate it. Yeah,
I wouldn't do it all. It's not the Celtics for crying.
Speaker 3 (01:33:45):
I got this thing on Twitter, you know, like this
Kevin Gallagher guy on Twitter. He puts up a ton
of like old old time NFL highlights and you know
it's right up my alley. They have the first ever
prime time meeting between the Patriots and the Jets. October eighteenth,
nineteen seventy six.
Speaker 4 (01:34:02):
Oh here at Schaffer.
Speaker 3 (01:34:04):
Stadium happened to be the first ever game attended by
a young Paul Peril. Wow, it was a Timelight forty
five to seven blowout win.
Speaker 4 (01:34:14):
For the Patriots. That oh, I like that. I like that.
Speaker 3 (01:34:19):
Learned a lot of stuff that night, fights, arrests, I
was eight years old, learned.
Speaker 4 (01:34:25):
The toilet's properly flushing, learned some new words.
Speaker 3 (01:34:27):
I had, my father, my grandfather, my uncle. We all
we went to the game, and my brother and I
used to switch, like any time anybody got tickets to
a game, Red Sox game or whatever, Oh, it's Paul's turn.
Oh it's richest turned. So it was richest turn.
Speaker 4 (01:34:41):
But he had.
Speaker 3 (01:34:41):
Football practice that night and my parents wouldn't let him
skip football tack And I went like, does.
Speaker 5 (01:34:48):
How many people out there have that same experience with
that old stadium? Because we talked about it a bunch
of times, Like you went to the old Foxborough Stadium
to watch the Patriots in the seventies and eighties, and
you were instantly like kind of traumatized a little bit
by the atmosphe.
Speaker 4 (01:35:00):
By what was going on, as you will.
Speaker 3 (01:35:02):
They had a chainlink fence underneath the stands, you know
in the back and they were conservatively fifty people a
lot to it, handcuffed to the fence, and I'm telling
you they had they were like they walked with me
in between them, my father on one side, my grandfather
and the other my uncle in front, and they just
(01:35:22):
like they surrounded me like let's go. And my father
was like, change is gonna kill me.
Speaker 4 (01:35:29):
Web radio at Patriot Star web Radio. Patriots dot com
is our electronic mail address. And SPI and Fresno wants
to know who is on fred Watch? Is someone designated
to be there this evening? Because his concern is if
this thing gets out of hand, that man is going
to need hugs and a new pair of pants with them.
I think, why the new pair of pants? I don't
(01:35:50):
know that's a good point. I don't know wha I mean?
Speaker 3 (01:35:54):
Do you guys change on the topic. You guys see
the show, Hey got fifty to fifty tonight He had
two to homers and stole the base. So first ever
fifty to fifty guy in the history of baseball. What
a tremendous accomplishment. Tremendous accomplishment. Phil in Coventry, Rhode Island.
Speaker 4 (01:36:09):
You're being sarcastic. Absolutely not, come on now time.
Speaker 18 (01:36:16):
I was just curious, like you guys think that like
BI might be a little too old and beating up
or you know, like maybe when you grab them for
a one year deal and uh stick them for him
an in depth player or something.
Speaker 3 (01:36:32):
And yeah, Phil, I do think probably that he is
a little bit beat up in in past his prime
at this point.
Speaker 4 (01:36:38):
Because I don't hate the question is at least a
lot of a lot of.
Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
People have talked about David Boi and I and I
and I understand exactly what Phils saying. But there's a
lot of teams in the league that are, you know,
badly in need of tackles, and no one's signing him.
So that tells me that he's probably done right and
a lot of teams need if he's ready, If he's
ready to play, how much does he help him? Does
he get him through the year? Yeah, I guess that's
(01:37:04):
what you're looking at. Yeah, my guess would be no, And.
Speaker 4 (01:37:06):
He doesn't even get If he doesn't even get you
through the year, then what are we talking about?
Speaker 7 (01:37:09):
Right?
Speaker 4 (01:37:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:37:09):
And again I'm not you know, I didn't have him
in for a workout I'm just judging it on conservatively.
There's twenty five teams in the league that could use
a tackle yep. And he's still unsigned yep. Right, and
he's and feel's right, he's not going to cost you anything.
Speaker 9 (01:37:24):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:37:25):
We're watching the Patriots offense go through their warm ups
at MetLife Stadium in their road white with the blue
pant is back. I see Taekwon Thornton walking through the screen,
I would put him as another bubble screen or tear
screen candidate, yes or no. I mean, I see what
(01:37:47):
you're getting on.
Speaker 5 (01:37:48):
I just I just want to see him go downfield,
like I just, I.
Speaker 4 (01:37:50):
Don't love running, so you don't want the bubble screen.
Speaker 5 (01:37:52):
I don't like well, no, I like it, but with
like Pop Douglas, who can make some guys miss Like
I just I'm worried about running Taekwon Thorn into the
formation and into all the traffic and trying to let
him bob and weave through guys. Is He's a straight
line speed guy, and I think that's what you got
to stick to. But you know it's Paul laid out
everything that they used to do in Cleveland with some
of those shot plays like that's it. Like right, let's
(01:38:13):
try to get Taekwon loose. And you know what, what
are the Jets gonna do with with Gardner today?
Speaker 4 (01:38:17):
Like how are they going to even employ him?
Speaker 5 (01:38:19):
We talked during the week in pu about does it
even matter? Do they just play sides and kind of
let what comes at them, let it be, And we're
not gonna adjust what we do. We're going to force
you to adjust to what we're doing.
Speaker 4 (01:38:30):
Paul, what was the date of the game. You said
it was your first game, October eighteenth, nineteen seventy, after.
Speaker 5 (01:38:35):
Six months and two days old. For Mike Young Mike
d wow, that's why no one like my centennial baby.
Speaker 4 (01:38:40):
Through the power of the people behind the glass back
in the tape room, let's go Matt Morrell and let's
fire up a little wayback machine. Look at this Grogan rolling.
Speaker 3 (01:38:52):
A touchdown run. This is right, forty five yard touchdown run, untouched, untouched.
Speaker 4 (01:38:57):
Do you remember it?
Speaker 3 (01:38:58):
I just told you what happened?
Speaker 10 (01:39:01):
That?
Speaker 3 (01:39:01):
Did that not just happen? Are you not entertained?
Speaker 4 (01:39:05):
Grogan pre neck role?
Speaker 3 (01:39:06):
I mean this is now you tell me, you tell
me those uniforms on better so great than the crap.
Speaker 4 (01:39:12):
Such a great uni, such a great highlight. Great job
behind the glass, Chris nick natt at all, nice job
Grogan on the I wouldn't I have seen a little
Jacoby Brissett uh aka the Houston game in his rookie year,
little naked booblet run.
Speaker 3 (01:39:31):
I don't want to see anything like that. If it
was Drake Mayn, I'm.
Speaker 4 (01:39:34):
All for what if it's set up? What if they
set him.
Speaker 3 (01:39:36):
Up for no, and there's like nobody there to catch him,
he can't run.
Speaker 8 (01:39:41):
No, I said that earlier. I don't want to see that.
Speaker 4 (01:39:44):
I have a trivia question for you.
Speaker 3 (01:39:45):
October October eighteenth, nineteen seventy six, Patriots forty five, Jets seven.
I told you Joe Willie was the quarterback of the Jets.
Who was the head coach of the Jets?
Speaker 4 (01:39:56):
Oh boy, Well it wasn't Web you Bank, No, it wasn't.
Speaker 3 (01:40:00):
It was a very very famous gentleman, that Tamara.
Speaker 4 (01:40:04):
You will know. It wasn't the great how Faults. It
was the great Lou Holtz. Really, you know Lou Holts? Sorry?
How many how many years did he do as a
Jets head coach? I don't think he made it through
the season.
Speaker 3 (01:40:17):
Yeah, that's kind of I don't scram the quarterback scrambling.
Speaker 4 (01:40:24):
He's like Ernie on stereos. I don't think my Lou
Holtz impression is very good. Let's see if Bill from
Springfield is any better. Bill High, You're nextion the Patriots
pregame show. Hello, Hey, gentlemen, that's gone good, and ladies please.
Speaker 22 (01:40:39):
I was watching a video breakdown the other day of
this guy saying that, you know, passing production yards per
game peaked in twenty fifteen, and it's been on a
slight downhill trend ever since. The rushing yards per game
he's been on a slight uphill trend. Do you think
that has anything to.
Speaker 23 (01:40:57):
Do with the Patriots wanting to run the football more?
Or do you think that's more just defenses these days
getting more keen to what's going on in the passing game,
getting better in disguised than what they're doing.
Speaker 22 (01:41:09):
Thanks. I appreciate everything you guys do.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
I think it's the lad question, Bill, it's the ladder,
and I think it's twenty nineteen, not twenty fifteen.
Speaker 4 (01:41:15):
I think the the.
Speaker 3 (01:41:17):
Apex of the production was twenty nineteen, twenty twenty, that
the COVID year and then since then it's been on
a decline.
Speaker 4 (01:41:26):
And that is the wow.
Speaker 3 (01:41:27):
That is the advent of the proliferation of the too
high safety looks.
Speaker 4 (01:41:33):
So COVID, who wants to two deep safeties is a Kuiper.
Speaker 5 (01:41:38):
So COVID not only ruined restaurants, but it also it
ruined NFL passing.
Speaker 4 (01:41:41):
There you go, COVID. There is COVID that killed the offense.
Speaker 5 (01:41:47):
I will say, though you know part of it and
everybody wants to say, like football is cyclical, and you know,
as defenses they pass more on offense, defenses get smaller
and lighter. And I always wondered, and we talked a lot.
Speaker 4 (01:41:58):
About it over the last few years with PA.
Speaker 5 (01:42:00):
You was Bill kind of trying to anticipate that and
trying to get heavier and trying to take advantage of
those things you know obviously didn't work. But I think
maybe at this point he's saying, ah see, this is
kind of all the way I saw.
Speaker 4 (01:42:12):
It going well, isn't it but it doesn't work.
Speaker 3 (01:42:14):
Isn't it him for work that would give him credit
no one scores.
Speaker 4 (01:42:17):
Isn't it him trying to be an outlier a little
bit as a going the other way. When everybody's going left,
he wants to go right.
Speaker 5 (01:42:23):
Well perhaps, but I mean, if you do subscribe to
football being cyclical, I mean this, this.
Speaker 4 (01:42:27):
Is where I will do that.
Speaker 3 (01:42:28):
You know, I'll do my best name dropping here. I
was talking to John Hannah, the John Hannah, not the
one that you call John Hannah Matt. He used to
be around the offices a lot. He used to do
a lot of stuff for our people.
Speaker 4 (01:42:41):
Just running over people in the office.
Speaker 3 (01:42:43):
As you can probably imagine, Hog was like very much.
Speaker 4 (01:42:47):
Hog, You're on a hog name basis with John Hannah,
I was.
Speaker 12 (01:42:50):
I was.
Speaker 3 (01:42:52):
You know, he talked a lot about you know, these
six man boxes, these two hundred and twenty five pound linebackers. Yeah,
and he would say exactly what you just said. You know,
they want to lighten up the box. You know, you
just line up and run them over.
Speaker 4 (01:43:10):
Like and that's like that.
Speaker 3 (01:43:11):
He said, like, it's gonna be cyclical, and everybody's gonna
play defense like this with all these small athletes on
the field, and they're not going to be able to
hold up to the running game. Now, what I would
have countered with had I'd not been super intimidated by
him is well, that's great, John, like, you can do that.
But yeah, Baltimore and San Francisco have been able to
(01:43:33):
run the ball and score. There aren't a lot of
examples of high powered offenses that play that way. Those
are two outliers to me. One of them has an
absolute freak of a quarterback and the other one has
an incredible passing game to go along with it. So yeah,
I like, like I said earlier in the show, you
(01:43:53):
can't run the ball much better than the Patriots have.
The first two games, they're averaging eighteen points a game.
Not to show it's hard. It's hard to score that hard.
Speaker 5 (01:44:02):
Way to live, hard, way to live to just real
quick off of Evan, off of Mayo on the Sports
Hub his hit saying, Jelani Tavai will wear the.
Speaker 4 (01:44:10):
Green dot to you? All right, the green dot guy?
I think someone Now, you said you used to hang
around with Hoggy? Did you go to his farm in
Alabam and hang with him?
Speaker 3 (01:44:21):
Now, I'm not as privileged as other people on this show.
Speaker 4 (01:44:24):
He's not that intimidating. No, he was not intimidated. Have
a rocking chair, I just does. I've got a great
picture of him. Straw in the sunset. Yeah, it's typical Hart.
Speaker 5 (01:44:34):
But does he raised down there by the way show
cattle cattle cattle farm, Yes.
Speaker 4 (01:44:39):
But by himself. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:44:40):
Just he's right, he's not intimidating at all, but he did.
He would just talk about like you got to run
the ball. It was like nineteen seventy eight at all
times in his mind.
Speaker 5 (01:44:50):
Well, just if I'd say, if anybody hasn't ever seen
John Hanna highlights, it's actually guard highlights.
Speaker 4 (01:44:54):
You wouldn't think, but man, it's fun to.
Speaker 5 (01:44:56):
Watch an athletic player, this guy who just cannot wait
till up on you just look it up to America's
which one Johnanna highlights just of him running guys over aggressively.
Speaker 4 (01:45:05):
I thought there was like a specific play that, you know,
not a.
Speaker 5 (01:45:08):
Big guy, but just uber aggressive and just will come
like a you know, a freight train, a little freight train.
Speaker 4 (01:45:14):
Maybe. I mean, because he's how big is he, Paul,
he's like six two six? Well, I mean he's not.
Speaker 5 (01:45:18):
You know, now you think I could look down here
now these days you think of guards, is you know
six three is kind of the baseline maybe, you know,
but he wasn't a big guy. Court of course back
then the guys were smaller anyway, but man, he could run,
he was aggressive, and he's he's.
Speaker 4 (01:45:33):
One of the all time greatest Patriots. It's a fun watch.
Speaker 5 (01:45:35):
If you check out six two sixty five, there you go,
it's two sixty.
Speaker 4 (01:45:38):
Five is a guard. I mean, that's not gonna happen, Mike.
As I said to him, he's with no disrespect to
number fifty six. And I think that's a decent contest
between Hannah and Tippett. Who's the second best Patriot of
all time? And with a slight tip of the cap,
I go seventy three. Johnny in South Beach, You're next
on the Patriots pre game show. Good evening, Johnny.
Speaker 19 (01:46:01):
Howdy, y'all are giving me fomo. I was thinking about
buying tickets to that Marlin Dodgers game, but I'm on
the couch and watch my boys.
Speaker 4 (01:46:09):
It's all just the update show.
Speaker 3 (01:46:10):
Hey, six for six, three home runs, ten Wow, have
a day, have a day show.
Speaker 4 (01:46:15):
Hey.
Speaker 19 (01:46:16):
I can usually get like first baseline tickets for like
ninety bucks too, but probably not for that game. Anyway.
I feel like Rogers has lost a step a little
bit in these first two games, and a lot of
his like magic throws from the past would come from
him like scrambling a tiny bit.
Speaker 4 (01:46:31):
Yep.
Speaker 19 (01:46:32):
So I'm wondering if there's a way that Patriots defense
can kind of, you know, turn the heat up in
that way and and you know, mix them up a
little bit mentally and make him make a mistake when
he would have scrambled in the past. And lastly, I
want Hooper to have a big game at some point
so I can call in and share my favorite jobs.
Right now, yes, I have a good game.
Speaker 4 (01:46:52):
Great, thanks joining U.
Speaker 5 (01:46:53):
Speaking today, I was talking to my my doctor friend
who's a sports doctor, and he just was talking about
how hard it is to come back from the Achilles injuries.
I mentioned Vince Wolford coming back for one year after
twenty thirteen he tore it, came back, had a pretty
good year in twenty fourteen. But I just my question
right now is is this Rogers or from here on out?
Or is this just Rogers getting comfortable getting his feet
(01:47:16):
And when you see Rogers down the road, he's going
to be a little bit more mobile.
Speaker 3 (01:47:19):
A little bit more comfortable, I think. So you know
that's think show. I'll let you know when I make
it back from I.
Speaker 8 (01:47:24):
Thought it was interesting.
Speaker 6 (01:47:26):
I think Rich mentioned earlier that he thought they were maybe,
you know, which was interesting to hear that For Aaron Rodgers,
hearing them say like, oh, I think that they were
trying to just be conservative, because like with Matt Jones,
absolutely they were being conservative, but with Aaron Rodgers being conservative,
it was just interesting to hear conservative and Aaron Rodgers
in the same sentence.
Speaker 5 (01:47:45):
I just think everybody's seeing the same thing with him
through two games, and it doesn't mean necessarily that he's washed,
but I think that's the question right now, is just
is he going to get that aggressiveness and that willingness
to move kind of in the pocket that made him
so great. I mean, he's just such a good player
on the move, throw the ball. It just seems like
he's not quite there yet.
Speaker 4 (01:48:02):
It's a long season.
Speaker 19 (01:48:03):
Michael.
Speaker 6 (01:48:04):
He trusts his offensive line or you think.
Speaker 3 (01:48:07):
I think he trusts mine. I don't think he trusts
his health.
Speaker 4 (01:48:10):
And I think.
Speaker 3 (01:48:12):
Johnny south Beach is right because that's kind of what
made Rogers was his ability to sort of prance around
throw off as Yeah, that's I think there's no I
think it's just the best way to describe it. You know,
I'm a writer and I'm asked to pain. He's a wordsman.
Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
I'm asked.
Speaker 3 (01:48:28):
I'm asked to paint a picture.
Speaker 4 (01:48:29):
So you captured the spirit of the thing.
Speaker 3 (01:48:30):
He's definitely a prancer, and he would, you know, make
all of these throw some different angles, you know a
lot of times with his feet, you know, off the
ground even. You know, he just special arm talent. And
I don't think that he feels comfortable enough to move
around and do that yet. Now, maybe it'll take just
you know, one time getting out of the pocket, getting
(01:48:51):
hit and he's okay, and maybe he says, okay, all right,
I didn't break, I'm all right, and then maybe you'll
see a little bit more.
Speaker 4 (01:48:57):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:48:57):
I also wonder how much of it is just the achilles,
how much of it is he's forty. Yeah, you know,
like Brady, Brady was outstanding and manipulating the pocket throughout
his career. He wasn't so great at it in Tampa
because he had no interest in doing it anymore. You know,
sometimes you just you know, you get rid of you
get rid of it, and you take it. You know,
you live to fight another day.
Speaker 4 (01:49:17):
Eight five five Pats five hundred, Boston Cream, You're next
on the Patriots pregame show. Hello Boston Cream, Hey Matt, Yes.
Speaker 22 (01:49:25):
I kind of feel like you coming on the show.
Speaker 9 (01:49:27):
It's kind of like going from with Hardy, from Trent
Brown to Calvin Anderson.
Speaker 22 (01:49:31):
And I'm just kind of wondering if we can get
some Vederian Lowe out of you.
Speaker 4 (01:49:35):
We're gonna work on it. Appreciates the phone call Boshington Cream.
Speaker 3 (01:49:38):
Wow, that's that's that's gonna make him cry himself to
sleep tonight on his giant pillows.
Speaker 4 (01:49:46):
It's all good, It's all good. We're gonna ask Washton
Cream to do it next week. How about that doughnut?
Speaker 9 (01:49:51):
Is knee?
Speaker 4 (01:49:51):
How about that bad doughnut? It is a bad doughnut. Now,
if it's okay, if Boston Cream's available, he can do
the postgame show. All right? Are we gonna do this?
Speaker 3 (01:50:02):
And we gonna gonna do I have to keep you
off of Twitter.
Speaker 4 (01:50:05):
No, I'm great. Web radio at Patriots dot com is
our electronic mail address. Colin wants to know and we
have talked about this. I'm not sure if you guys
addressed us already. But how do you think Kden Walls
having to fill in the left tackle will affect their
usage of tackle eligible formation? Should we look for one
of the practice squad fellas to assume that I didn't
(01:50:26):
get promoted. No practice squad guys, Jacob.
Speaker 5 (01:50:29):
I think, but sort of practice squad guys is there.
You know, they've had some time to get up to speed.
But that that tray Jacob's guys.
Speaker 4 (01:50:35):
Monster. I mean he looks so I'm like sixty seven.
Speaker 5 (01:50:38):
I mean, he's Trent Brown size, but Paul's I think
Paul's right. Leverett Leverett maybe, I mean, it doesn't necessarily
have to be a tackle. It's what they call it,
the muscle tight the muscle muscle tight end. I think
I think Nick Leverett, uh, you know, might be the option.
But I just, you know, no disrespect to Hooper Henry.
Speaker 4 (01:50:53):
They're not you know, plus blockers.
Speaker 5 (01:50:54):
I think they fight hard and they'll they'll give you
some seams here and there, but you know, when you
really want to go hower run, I think putting one
of those extra offensive linemen in there is a good move.
But again it's limiting because.
Speaker 4 (01:51:06):
By the way, I was not crying about that. If
Boston crea wants to come on and come on down,
Come on down, Matt, Let's go to the Sunday six pack.
This is the Sunday six packs. So kick back and
listen up. This um gets in a getting the pits back.
Speaker 5 (01:51:19):
You better bring a big sacket game to win it.
Speaker 4 (01:51:22):
Yet this is the Sunday sixth bad does seem like
the week is flying by when the game is played
on Thursday night when the Patriots are in the Meadowlands
to take on the Jets. But we start with the
Sunday games first, Paulie, it doesn't look like the records
are very good on the picks. Yes or no.
Speaker 3 (01:51:39):
We were all three and three last week and we
are all tied at five, six and one.
Speaker 4 (01:51:43):
That is mediocre.
Speaker 8 (01:51:44):
That is ca.
Speaker 4 (01:51:47):
Wow. All right, to kick things off the one o'clock
games on Sunday, where the Paul's Super Bowl favorite Houston
Texans traveling to Minnesota to take on the surprising two
and oh Minnesota Vikings. The Texans are favored their road favorites. Paul,
you go first.
Speaker 3 (01:52:06):
I will take Houston to keep that going, but I
am impressed with Minnesota's done. I think that sam Donold
looks pretty good in a one of those examples of
you get a good offensive minded coach and kind of
have a good system and a good scheme. But I'm
a little worried about them being banked out. Justin Jefferson
Jordan Addison both banked up last week. I haven't had
(01:52:30):
Hawkinson yet, So I'm gonna take Houston on the road.
Sorry that I just don't take, you know, Kansas City
and San Francisco to be the only good teams in
football like Matt does every week. You have to do
it for like eleven years in a row before Matt.
Speaker 4 (01:52:43):
Says, yeah, yeah, they're pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:52:44):
Nowadays, Houston's pretty good. I don't think I ever called
them a super Bowl team, but I think that pretty I.
Speaker 4 (01:52:49):
Just don't subscribe to the flavor of the month club
like you do. I will agree with think they're a
playoff team. That's and say that Houston wins on the road.
But really, hats off to Kevin O'Connell. What job is
he doing in Minnesota. He looks like he might be legit.
I wanted a tight pants guy. There you go.
Speaker 5 (01:53:06):
Yeah, I'm gonna go with Houston. They're still in the
honeymoon phase with Stefan Diggs. So it's all going great
right now.
Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
Next up the Philadelphia How little he's being targeted right,
He's happy. I told you, I told you.
Speaker 4 (01:53:18):
Next up the Eagles on the road after their Monday
night loss is at the Darlings. Are the first two
weeks in New Orleans. Saints Michael, I'll let you kick
things off with this game, please, thank you. Saints by
two and a half. Yeah, I'm gonna take the Saints.
Speaker 5 (01:53:31):
They're playing really well. Derek Carr. I don't know if
I'm buying, but for this early part of the season,
hard to go against him. Houston.
Speaker 4 (01:53:38):
I'm sorry, New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (01:53:41):
I'm gonna take Philadelphia to bounce back. I think they
just have a better roster. But the Saints offense in
the first two weeks has been unbelievable. Generally, those fast
starting offenses.
Speaker 4 (01:53:52):
Get figured out.
Speaker 3 (01:53:54):
It takes them a little while. So I'm not sure
that Phillies defense will will do it this week. But
they got to find a way to take the big
play away from Shiheed. It seems like he's catching a
seventy yard touchdown every week, and then Camara it's just
like in the in the Time Machine, he looks like
he did three or four years ago. But I'm gonna
take the Eagles to bounce back.
Speaker 4 (01:54:12):
I don't have a great reason to select the Eagles
with this one. That that place looks like it has
a shot to go a little dysfunctional. You know, a
former coach and his assistant were conveniently walking through the
warm up lines during the Barrack game show. Embarrassing. But
I think Philadelphia will rebound this week. I just don't
think New Orleans is as good as they've looked in
(01:54:32):
the first two weeks. Next up the Chargers two and
zero against the two and oh, Pittsburgh Steelers. How do
the Steelers do it every week? Boys? Mike Tomlin doing
a great job. The Steelers are one point home favorite.
I think the Steelers, They've got a little little bit
of that mojo going with him. I think Tomlin's got
things going well. This is a good spot from Herbert
(01:54:54):
might be banged up.
Speaker 3 (01:54:56):
I know we was gonna think on Wednesday he did
practice today, though, a couple.
Speaker 4 (01:55:00):
Of days to see how that streams itself out. But
I like the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (01:55:03):
Maybe in that one, I'm gonna go with the lack
uh I think It all starts with the run. Let
Herbert hand it off for a little bit, make the
throws when he needs to. They look like a new
kind of team. It's it's Jim Harborough or John harp
Which Harbor? Jim Jim Jim Harbough seems like he's brought
a little bit of the new new personnelity.
Speaker 3 (01:55:19):
I'm going to take the lack too. I'm a little
concerned about it because of two things. One, I think
Herbert is definitely not right. For him to miss a
Wednesday practice to me, is significant. And they want to
run the ball, like Mike said, And I think Pittsburgh
will be a little bit more difficult to run the
ball against. But I just think the Steelers stink Bill.
Speaker 4 (01:55:39):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:55:40):
Can we just fast forward and make him nine and eight,
give him the seventh wild card, give him a loss
at whoever they go to in the playoffs, and just
we'll call it a season.
Speaker 4 (01:55:49):
Good program. I would be so dismissive of them put
that one in the last Ewan Felger. Do I need
to get coached up on the acronym lack. I didn't
know that that was. Yeah, we have the lar and
the lar in the last in lack Okay, you four
PM game that we've got highlighted here in the Sunday
six pack is the No. More two of Miami Dolphins
at Seattle, where Seattle is a four and a half
(01:56:11):
point favorite.
Speaker 5 (01:56:12):
Mike, Yeah, Seahawks at home. I just impressed with them
last week. You know, Smith played great. Seems like they're
buying into what Mike Mike McDonald's selling. I think he
had some success last year against Miami, if I if I.
Speaker 4 (01:56:24):
Remember correctly, So I'm gonna go with Seattle and I'll
lay the points.
Speaker 3 (01:56:27):
Paul, I'm gonna take Seattle too. But I think there's
a chance that Skyler Thompson will do okay for Miami.
I think there's a lot of weapons there. Curious. Do
you hold on to Tyreek Hill like maybe if you
have them in fantasy?
Speaker 4 (01:56:46):
Yes, hold on? Don't give him up yet.
Speaker 3 (01:56:47):
Well, I wouldn't like release him, but with you bench him, No, No,
I mean when you have a team like me that
I could win with my bench players as well as
my starters, like these decisions to be made.
Speaker 4 (01:56:56):
There's some thought maybe into spaining. There's some thought maybe
too being the pregame show with it by another hour
so we can hear Paul talk about it, because there's
nothing more interesting than hearing people talk.
Speaker 3 (01:57:05):
About I beg to differ someone's golf game and their
NCAA basketball picks, and they're also worth talking about their kids.
I will take Seattle, Mike.
Speaker 4 (01:57:17):
I was impressed by Gino Smith. I wasn't really impressed
with Seattle last week. I think it's a tough spot
for Skyler Thompson to be in, and I like the
Seahawks begrudgingly. In that game Sunday Night Football, it's the
Atlanta Falcons and they're well dressed owner hosting the Kansas
City Chiefs, the one on one Falcons against the two
and Ozero Chiefs. Travis Kelsey has been a little critical
(01:57:39):
about the offense to start. I don't see a reason
why Kansas City doesn't go down and win that game.
I mean, I don't think they're going to be tremendously tested.
But I like the Chiefs in that one. Yeah, me too.
Speaker 3 (01:57:50):
I will take the points. I like the hook with Atlanta.
I think they got a big emotional win on a
Monday night.
Speaker 4 (01:57:57):
They come back.
Speaker 3 (01:57:57):
Home, and I think the Chiefs two or three times
every season, get in a dogfight, neither lose or barely
squeak one out against a team that you would think
they wouldn't have much trouble with. I want to predict
that this is going to be one of those games.
Speaker 5 (01:58:14):
Air guitar Charlie, had you already stocked that one, Dad,
I just said, I'm with Kansas City.
Speaker 4 (01:58:17):
Too, Okay. And as we wrap things up here in
the Patriots Pree Game Show, it's the game of the night,
the only game in town on Amazon and locally here
in Boston on WFXT, the Patriots on the road Division
game against the New York Football Jets. With the Jets
are six and a half point favorites.
Speaker 5 (01:58:32):
Mike, I think the Jets will win, but I like
the Patriots to keep it close. I will take the
Patriots plus six point five, but I think the Jets
will will win.
Speaker 4 (01:58:41):
Something in the neighborhood of twenty one to seventeen.
Speaker 3 (01:58:44):
Yeah, I see a very similar game. I'll say twenty
to sixteen. I think the Jets will win it, but
I just don't believe in the Jets offense to sort
of run away and hide. So Patriots have shown me
through the first two weeks of the Joe the Gerrod
Meo era that they'll show up and they'll fight and
they'll be physical. I think that will continue.
Speaker 4 (01:59:03):
As my friend Mike Reese likes to say, it's not
the schedule is when you play them. I do not
like this spot for the Patriots. I think we're gonna
see some growing pains tonight and I like the Jets
to cover in this one. I think this is gonna
be a tough game for the Patriots. We will dissect
and analyze it all after the game when the Patriots
(01:59:23):
take on the Jets. For Matt Morrell and Matt Lapan,
Chris Judge, Josh Davis, Nick Poppolo, Mike do So, Tamara Brown,
and Paul Perolo on Matt Smith enjoy the game, Everybody
Go Pats.
